Description
Highway Intersection to R/C/I Grid. Highway on/off-loading should cause minimal traffic issues. Traffic within grid is extremely efficient. Works with any zoning; Residential, Commercial and Industrial (inc. high density, offices, etc)!

It can handle insane loads and can be expanded modularly. To expand simply remove the edges of the grid, expand in any direction you wish, then put back one-way outer lanes (mind to keep same directional flow).

INSTRUCTIONS(!!!): Consider this a small template - AFTER you plop it down you need to expand the grid to whatever size you want! You need to make the grid large enough for the "economy of scale" to kick in.

Please watch the video attached to see how you can expand the grid easily.

ATTENTION: The minimal version of my "Highway Intersection to Grid" allows easier placement and customization.

Yeah as I stated in an earlier comment in my opinion it's better to have more medium-sized grids instead of a few mega grids :) If you unlock all 25 tiles it's extremely unlikely you'll run out of space!

Additionally don't forget about buses/metros for residential and cargo terminals/harbors for industrial/commercial! These can greatly reduce the traffic volume on all your roads!

It seems if I make it any bigger than 6 tiles wide and 7 tiles high it gets clogged up.

Yeah the key to this setup is having a fast feed down the middle with no traffic lights, and a one-way exit around the edge. Forces an efficient in-out flow which works particular well for industrial and commercial :)

I was trying to make something like this for my city, but it kept falling apart. It seems the solution to my problem is having the input in the center, not the sides. Thanks for this.

I'll try to create a few medium-sized grids first then as opposed to the super-grid I had before.
And with the outflow bit I meant that if it'd be possible to create additional entrances to the grid. So it can become larger. If so, then how to do it?

R0dr1ck: Well yes, I personally tend to make my grids about 7-10 horizontal streets about 4-7 spaces (40-70 tiles) wide each. I kinda feel its better to create more medium-sized grids instead of fewer mega-sized ones...

What do you mean single outflow of the central bit? I don't understand sorry...

Pepo: There wasn't any particular reason I picked residential/offices in the video. :) Commercial works perfectly too :D In fact when I play now I tend to use this asset mostly for high density commercial or industrial as they have the heaviest traffic!

Well I've been trying to wrap my brain around, so to speak, creating an exit/entrance that can be used for both sides of the highway but it's very complicated... I'd suggest for now just place each grid a little apart. If you run the 25-plot unlocked you'll never have issues with space anyway. Plus placing them a little apart might help traffic as well.

And why in your vid you did not use any commercial zoning in your grid? That is maybe the reason you had problem on your highway, all those people travelling for commerce to different parts of the city?

Hey. Is there a way how to make the grid on both side of the "main" highway so I can build on both sides? Thanks

It did clog up after a while.
Which caused mass abandonment, sadly. It reached a peak of 80k pop.

Could you show on how to add a single outflow of cars to create traffic relief at the congestion of the central bit?

And how many horizontal streets would be optimal without creating a massive congestion as a result. For my latest I did about 15-20.
