INTRO
Hey everybody, Dom here. Today I’d like to talk briefly about a medic’s heal target priority list.

INTRO 2
The medic is one of the most important classes in Team Fortress 2. They’re extremely powerful and can be the focal point of a big game-winning push. When playing medic it’s important to have a priority list of which teammates to focus healing on and keep alive. There are a lot of situations where it’s arguably better to heal one teammates over another. From most important to least important: this is a general list of what targets medic players should focus on.

Number 1: you. As a medic the number 1 most important person to keep alive is yourself. If you die no one on your team get’s healing.

Number 2: Another friendly medic. If a medic player dies the other medic can fill their roll until they return. Note: medics can’t overheal themselves so they appreciates receiving overheals and will likely return the favour.

Number 3: Banner soldiers. When they blow their horn they should receive more healing attention as they give every other teammate a buff. If they die before their banner duration is over some of the time and effort that went in achieving the banner goes to waste.

Number 3.5: Other teammates receiving or experiencing temporary buffs. As an example: a phlogistinator pyro that activate their crits effect is more likely to get more benefit from the buff if they’re being healing and helped to stay alive.

Number 4: Teamates in critical condition. Teammates that are on fire, effected by a debuff or are low on health.

Number 5: Friendly soldiers and demomen heading from spawn to the front line. By rocketjumps and stickyjumps these classes basically exchange health to get to the battle faster. Healing these classes on the way helps ensure they’re closer to full health when they arrive at their destination.

Number 6: Every other teammate. (After this point the remaining heal targets for the medic aren’t ideal.)

Number 7: Teamates already receiving healing from a different source. For example the cart, a dispenser, another medic, etc. Healing these targets cases uber to builder slower as well.

Number 8: Teammates hanging back. Teammates, such as a sniper hanging back or an engineer at his nest far away from the front line. It may not be the best to outwardly deviate from the front line to heal these targets. These teammates aren’t in immediate danger and have a lower likelihood of taking damage.

Number 9: Spies on the same team. If it could potentially blow their cover it’s best to not heal a friendly spy. They should instead be ignored. If there are no enemies around or the spy has already been revealed then it’s ok to heal them.

ALTERNATIVE THINGS TO CONSIDER
And that was the basic list of a medic’s healing target priorities. There’s however more to consider when choosing who to heal than just the list. Situations can come up and certain circumstances can modify what target is the best target to focuses healing on.

COMPETITIVE PLAY
In a competitive play environment a lot of rules as to who is best to heal change. One thing to consider in competitive play is there’s more emphasis on ubers. When the enemy medic’s uber is ready and used versus the friendly medic’s uber is important information to keep track of.

HEALING THE SKILLFULL
The skill level of heal targets plays a role in what teammates to heal. If another player is really skilful it may be best to try and keep them alive more than a teammate that isn’t very good. They may be better at keeping the medic alive as well as achieving map objectives and killing opponents thus increasing the likelihood of victory. (Another way to look at the situation is that it’s better to heal bad teammates as the skilful ones need less help than the sub par ones. It comes down the philosophy.)

COSMETICS AND SKILL
Some medic players priorities healing players with flashy cosmetics and unusual hats versus everyone else. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing to do. Flashy cosmetics suggest a player is invested in Team Fortress 2. A new player and a player not invested in the game will likely not have a lot of cosmetics. So there’s basically a weak correlation between players wearing cosmetics and skill level but that’s still a correlation.

WHEN GOING TO UBER
One of the functions of a medic’s medi gun is to build uber and use it to make a push or counter a push. A medic’s priority of heal target should change to a class more suitable to receive an uber when the medic intends to uber someone.

FAST CLASS
One factor that might affect a medic’s heal priority list is contact with faster teammates. For example when a friendly scout runs by, the medic may only have a small chance to heal or overheal even give that teammate. If a faster teammates runs by and it’s not extremely important to continue healing other teammates around, it’s probably best to use the small window of opportunity and health the fast teammate.

UBER BUILD SELF DAMAGE
One thing that might case a medic to not heal the highest priority target is for uber building purposes. A soldier, demoman or a few other classes that can damage themselves with certain weapons equipped can help a medic build uber by damaging themselves on purpose. Note: uber builds at the maximum rate when a round is still in setup time, thus making self-damaging for uber pointless in this phase.

OUTTRO
And that just about sums up everything noteworthy in terms of a medic’s priority list for healing teammates. The Team Fortress 2 medic is an important class that has the power to decide what players receives healing, in what order and for how long. A medic that can keep their priorities in check can do well and help immensely towards the success of their team.

Another rule of thumb for healing is to heal teammates who are at the front lines and actively taking any kind of damage. Heal them before you heal any retreating teammates on their way to a dispenser or health pack.

I feel like the type of medigun also changes healing priorities. If you got the Quickfix, healing the scout longer than normal can get you to the front lines/any injured faraway teammates faster and easier. Vaccinator would put soldiers and demos much higher on the list since you can give them blast resistances, allowing them to rocket jump without much damage suffering (unless if they don't receive self-inflicted damage protection from that).

I would have to disagree with part. Always, and I mean always, flash heal the sniper. This is for highlander, mainly. This gives him an advantage of being able to survive a headshot without dying. Also, putting demoman/soldiers higher up would be better. They are the main dps for the team.
