I do use heightmaps, but I'm still not that great of a mapper with these tools. My best map is similar to this in terms of the highways/rails, but that doesn't interfere. The terrain on said map is very rough and is almost impossible.

I think you should try to make a map that actually seems like it could be irl instead of just using "Height Maps" of things, and that's just for terrain shaping. The way the natural resources are just kind of dumped where and however is not very realistic, and the highways/railroads are set up initially is not very efficient. I've had the hardest time trying to work with the railroad being so close to the highway, its really a pain where it is. Also, that water source in the middle is like "where the fruit is this water coming from?" plus making a hydro power-plant doesn't really work cause the level is so low that it doesn't go through and create power, and if you build it low enough it doesn't generate enough power to be worth it.

And that's not even mentioning how the...river...thing, looks (honestly, it looks like a turd). The only thing about this map that's cool is the aperture logo, and you didn't even make that yourself. -.- I just hope you've learned more about making maps since you made this one, cause looking at this and the others I'm not too confident. :/
