The father, who's name I can't even remember, got about a line of dialogue before his untimely death, for which I assume I was supposed to feel sorry, but considering no relationship was developed between the main character and his father, I couldn't care less. The master I was actually glad died because he was an annoying jackass, and that girl in the port town who "liked dogs and her favorite color was blue" got no more than a raised eyebrow from me.
Also wanted to bang my head against the desk at Fus Ro Da.
I quit shortly after the thief joined my party.
Conclusion: The most important aspect of a game to me is story, and this game did not deliver. Sorry, but I can't go above 4/10
