Hi, this is a new mod that I have started working on that overhauls the visual appearance of the Western Roman Empire. I am not going to say this is a historically accurate mod, but I think it might have a little bit more realism then vanilla. If you are like me, then you felt underwhelmed by the vanilla WRE skins, and you are seaking something different. I aim to provide that different appearance.


This mod should be compatible with every other mod that does not change the apperance of the WRE's unit roster. I personally am using Radious and various other mods.

A big thanks to The Germans are Coming for his osp Roman shield textures, this mod simply wouldn't have happened without them.

List of revamped units and details

Limitanei Borderguards: With this unit I decided on going for a slightly romanized barbarian look. you will see some barbarian armor mixed in the unit and the unit does not have a standardized shield pattern.

Cohors West: I gave it the apperance of a lightly armoured levy unit that doesn't have a standardized shield pattern.

Legio West: A unit from the professional Roman army, the unit has a standardized shield pattern and is well equiped with armor.

Comitatensis Spears: This unit is shared by all Roman factions so I decided against giving it a single shield pattern and instead opted to give it multiple patters. One thing that really bothered me about this unit in vanilla was that not every soldier wore a helmet, that has been fixed.

Palatina West: Even though this is a level one unit in game in real life Roman Palatina units were elites within the army so this units equipment reflects that fact. Single shield pattern.

Western Auxilia Palatina: Made this unit look much more like a high level unit within the Roman army. looks far less barbarian and more Roman.

Legio Comitatenses West: Made to look like a high end professional Roman unit. The vanilla version looked far to barbarian for my taste, mine looks like a proper Roman regiment.

Elite Palatina: As the name suggests this unit has a very elite look too it. Unique in the fact that it has no chainmail present, but instead only scale armor. Even though the gladious has long since fallen out of use by this time I still gave it to some of the soldiers within the unit as a nod to Rome's glory days.

Herculiani Seniores: The top of the line WRE infantry regiment. They might look awesome, but dont mess with them.

Protectores Domestici West: So with this unit I basically took the approach that it is more or less an elite mercenary unit hired out of pocket of a high ranking Roman and not a memeber of the professional army. Due to this, the unit has a lot more visual variety then other state sponsered professional troops.

Armigeri Defensores: Another professional heavy infantry unit, that has a decent amount of scale armour mixed in with the normal chainmail. I'm not entirely sure I'm happy with the shield these guys have so I might change it, I may give them a curved oval instead of the round flat.

Foederati Spears: They now have a very distinct Germanic look to them though they are still equiped with Roman shields. This may change later, and I might also dump the light ridge helms in favor of a germanic helmet.

Comes West: This unit now uses a curved round shield instead of a massive curved oval shield, which didn't seem suited for a cavalry unit to me.

ERE Legio: Very similar to its western counterpart, but has a different shield pattern. I also added in a little scale armour.
