A likely easier alternative, though, is probably to set up the rotor at the front of the vehicle, and turn the entire crane into a piston system that can stand up from a flat position, and just raise the head vertically, like a forklift whose rails can lay flat. In fact...that sounds like a really good idea to me...
I suspect either of these changes would likely introduce balance issues, but by simply locking the vehicle in place when manipulating the arm, that issue is solved.
Unfortunately, I'm horrible at actually building things. I'm basically the opposite of how you describe yourself in the video, great at using things, horrible at building them.
What would likely be a huge improvement to this design would be to add a second rotor at the head that operates in sync with but in the opposite direction of the one on the vehicle. This would keep the tools level so that you don't end up with only the bottom one being close enough to work.
It might also be a good idea to set up pistons to allow the crane to extend. What would be REALLY awesome would be if you were to somehow figure out how to sync up two sets of pistons, one in the arm itself, one on the head past the rotor I suggested, so that when you raise the arm, it automatically extends forward so that you raise it in a straight line.
Aaaaaaaand I hit the character limit again.
Btw i'm a big fan, plus i have an idea gopescope
