Advanced Light Entities

Description

REVERTED TO THE PREVIOUS VERSION DUE TO COMPATIBILITY ISSUES

I tried pushing a massive update that added new features, but it broke content for the old version.
I will try to make the new version compatible before proceeding with the update.
Sorry about the mess! Let me know if any issues persist please!

This Addon adds four simple entities to the game:
  • A one-of-a-kind, shadow-casting point light
  • A normal ("cheap") point light
  • A projected light
  • A "spot" light (that uses the built-in light_dynamic entity)

Each entity is very basic and fully editable!
You can spawn them from the entities tab in the spawn menu, and you can edit them by right-clicking from the Context Menu and selecting Edit Properties. The "cheap" point light is the same kind that the light tool creates, and the projected light is the same kind that the lamp tool creates. What makes these entities so special is that they are very simple -- no models, no ropes -- just the basic light. And they are also fully editable! They can have any of their many properties changed in real time, just like the Editor Entities!

You must have Shadow Detail set to High for shadows to work! From the main menu, go to Options -> Video -> Advanced -> Shadow Detail and set shadow detail to High. If there is no option for high, try this: From your game library, right click on Garry's Mod, go to Properties, click on SET LAUNCH OPTIONS... and try adding:
-force_vendor_id 0x10DE -force_device_id 0x1180
or
-force_vendor_id 0x10DE -force_device_id 0x1180 -dxlevel 95

Important! To spawn more than one expensive light you must increase the number of shadow textures. The Projected Light uses 1 shadow texture and the Expensive Light uses 6 shadow textures. By default, the Source Engine does not support more than 8 shadow textures. To increase this number, do this: From your game library, right click on Garry's Mod, go to Properties, click on SET LAUNCH OPTIONS... and add:
-numshadowtextures 16
You don't have to use exactly 16, but don't set it too high.

You can use the material tool and the lamp tool to change the Texture of the Projected Light, and you can use the color tool and the light tool to change the color of any light!

Also, I apologize for the hiatus. Updates should be coming to my other mods soon!

Please be aware: Textures not specifically made to be projected won't project correctly on to models in Windows, and won't project correctly on to anything in OSX.

A quick update:
I am working on a new system for organizing content that will be implemented into my addons. I am almost finished with this system, and when I am, I will add it to this mod and then finish working on compatibility. I will then attempt to push the new update for this mod again. I should have this all done in less than a week, but only if the mod passes playtesting and is absolutely compatible with content using the old version.

is there anyway you could share the new update like make it a new workshop upload or smth? because i liked it and i kinda got sad that it got reverted

just vanilla gmod, non-source engine saves, I'm not aware of any "save" addons

I don't have a lot of experience playing around with dupes and things in sandbox, and I have spent very little time in multiplayer, so I'm out of the loop when it comes to many things. When you mention "saves" and "sets" I assume you're talking about normal gmod saves and dupes, but are you also talking about Source Engine saves, or third-party things such as other addons? Are there any other addons that I should take into consideration when working on compatibility?

Hi tau,
Thank you for reverting the ALE addon to its previous version while you work on compatibility.
If I may suggest something, have you considered uploading the new version as a 2.0 addon while renaming this one to [Legacy Version] or something along those lines?
Of course, if your new version straight-up works with all old ALE's, this wouldn't be necessary. Just an idea from a loyal user.

Your addon has helped many Gmod users make beautiful poses, posters, and animations.

but then good luck getting all 170K subscribers to get the new one... a simple check for old versions of the removed entities should do the trick no?

Could you just make the new version as a separate mod?
Weegeepie 19 Jun @ 9:20pm
hey, all good! :) I can confirm the revert restores any missing light issues
tau  [author] 19 Jun @ 7:42pm
I have reverted it. Let me know if any issues persist or if it somehow didn't revert correctly. I will be working on making the new version more compatible with the older content before uploading it. Sorry about the mess.
