Amphion - Charybdis - Atmospheric Auger

Description
Amphion would like to present the Charybdis, a mid-class small mining craft that has a unique vertical orientation. This configuration may disrupt the conventional mining thought process, but thankfully the Charybdis is designed to fly via two methods, remote control and traditional cockpit flight. It has a pretty sizable safe weight load in various atmospheres (if one ignores cargo capacity in Liters) and in various gravitational forces.

Its drilling systems and other facets of operation are driven by timer blocks.
1 - Engages the drills and activates warning lights and a warning sound
2 - Disengages the drills and deactivates pertinent systems
4 - Purges stone (can be activated while drilling but can interfere with drilling safely).
5 - Locks the ejection system

Remote control (for traditional orientation) is activated by pressing 3 while inside the craft.

The maximum safe loads for each planet are as follows
Alien - Approx. 729,000 kg total mass
Earth - Approx. 810,000 kg total mass (variable thanks to atmospheric density differences)
Mars - Approx. 900,000 kg total mass

Unloaded mass
Approx. 100,000 kg (with default ice and uranium loads)

While flying close to maximum load, your descent will be much harder to compensate for, so take that into account while piloting.

Main Storage
2 Medium Cargo Containers

Main Power Source
-6 batteries
-6 small reactors

Features a stone ejection system to reduce total mass before returning to your base of operations, or alternatively (locking systems) will allow you to pull all the stone using a separate cargo craft via the connector.

The ship itself can rest on its drills, but only if you touch down very gently with the craft. There is a projection system built into the craft itself just in case things go wrong while mining.

The killswitch feature is turned off by default to reduce potential sensor-induced crashes. If you want the killswitch enabled, it'll stop the craft from turning you, or any other potential nearby adventurous engineers, into strawberry milkshakes.

Behind the name

Charybdis was a sea monster, who was born from Gaia and her son Poseidon, was originally a sea-nymph who flooded land to enlarge her father's kingdom, until Zeus turned her into a monster. The craft is meant to be the atmospheric counterpart to the Scylla, another deca-miner with similar safety features. A common saying in greek mythology was "Between Scylla and Charybdis", an idiom meaning "having to choose between two evils", though the only evils these ships commit is making holes in otherwise perfectly normal landscapes and asteroids.

As with all Amphion Vessels, all vanilla, all the time!

Slow drill rates can be attributed to voxel update rates in the game. This kind of miner would normally drill a lot faster.

Ah, thanks for the reply. I'd also note that the purge system doesn't seem to be working anymore. :-(

Other than that, I've used this ship heavily over the weekend. Designing an atmospheric miner with a decent payload capacity is the most difficult thing to do in SE right now IMO. Thanks for saving me the headache,

No, I need to update

The LCD screens inside the ship don't seem to update. Do I need to download the LCD mods you mentioned in the description?

Thanks! I'm glad people have been getting use out of them. It means a lot to me, and motivates me to make more for people to enjoy :)

I want to uprate ALL your ships but it'll take to long, I took and modified the Sterlet to allow it to move in space as well (added some merge blocks to the top and another ship that is it's space partner as it were). I've also used the regular atmo miner and I plan on trying this one out once I get a projector on my planetary base.

Did they change the range at which atmospheric thrusters damage craft?

Top large engines destroy half of the ship, when used more than 5 minutes ... :(

Holding down the alt-mode with drills will allow you to get through rock very quickly if you want to do manual. The automatic mode is there so you don't have to sit there holding the mouse button down while going through ore.

Basically I changed it to have just 9 drills because that's the limit for the ship on my server. I placed them wider so I can mine with LMB and don't bother will I fit or not. Other thing is that leaving ship on the connector isn't safe these days. :steamsad: something can explode. Since landing on drills doesn't convice me I made landing spot for this and my own landing gear that goes to the sides. That was done on the run because I already had problem with connector and had to ask admin for help. Additionally I put some more safety part below incase some lag - sometimes during lag, ship can go few meters up just by itself.

The effect you can see here. https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=655665849

Perhaps I'll update it to look better - but from functional point of view it's much better. Since those changes I can get my ore safe without much trouble even on MP.

mind posting it to me?
