UPDATE: More automation and reduced cargo weight. Testing fully loaded with x5 containers at 500k each was death. Now even fully loaded it should get you to the surface safely. Also added an automatic mass block so ships gravity will help pull it out as the single thruster when fully loaded is not sufficient. - IN THE WORKS: After some thought on this. I should have used a built in gravity generator to help pull the pod on launch. There is room for this in the bottom where the mass block is located for anyone wishing to make field modifications. Also there is additional room for cargo if you want to add it (since the thing was initially to be used as a cargo module on standby) but this will void the warranty as if over-loaded as this causes various issues from launch to landing. I have built a smaller version and placed it on the workshop here. https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=599122484

Work in progress (WIP) but functional for the most part.
.
Finally a FUNCTIONAL escape pod thats worth having. Designed more-so to save cargo in the event of emergencies than passengers it also serves as modular cargo storage when not in use because we all know we can respawn ourselves with medical bays but we cant save all that ore we've been mining for days and weeks.
.
Hard landing one time usage escape / drop pod. Testing has shown an 80% survival rate (unloaded) on earth gravity. I hope to add more automation to this in the future but the basics of operation are the top thruster (when triggered) will burn through the merge block and release the pod automatically. Than off you go. Entering a planet just align it correctly (bottom down) and make sure dampeners are on. It'll free fall until about 5000m than should automatically slow itself down to a stop at around 500m to 1000m. At least while empty. If fully loaded it might do a hard landing but should still be going slow enough to survive. ..... I hope ...... Not tested it fully loaded.
.
If coming down without load on normal terrain it slows itself down to a stop around 500m to 1000m above the surface almost perfectly. Since cargo mass is calculated im assuming (UNTESTED IN THIS REGARD) that loaded down it'll still survive although it might touch down a bit hard it should have enough 'crumple space' for the occupant and cargo to survive the impact.
.
So under normal conditions. Use it as an extra cargo module and in emergencies.. even if that cargo doesn't survive at least the gankers wont get any loot off you. Although again from my unloaded test it works quite well.
.
Ion thruster is turned off by default to keep it from burning through the merge block upon movement and really until ejecting all thrusters should be disabled. Simply let it fall and dampers should take over at about 5000m. Its a scary ride down. Remote block and single gyro for limited orientation controls.
.
Modular cargo. Its all wired up with x1 cargo containers and x2 side connector blocks. This is made to be merged than be connected with larger ships to serve as additional cargo space when not in emergency situations. This is what distinguishes it from other escape pods that only serve to carry a passengers. Its also made with large grid blocks so should merge with any stations/large ships effortlessly long as you've got room to fit it. Can be external, internal, or half exposed with the end sticking out. I think the half-n-half would look coolest with the dome exposed but thats upto the ship designer.
