Northern Fury 8 - Hold the Line, 1994

Description
Hold the Line!

This is the 8th scenario in a 20-24 scenario campaign. See the Northern Fury background document for further insight on the background and happenings so far. The key nuggets:

· Cold War continued, no thaw in relations. Germany still divided, WP still alive and doing very well.
· 13 Feb 1994 while the world watched the Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, the WP launch a war across Europe, the Mid East and Korea
· Iceland is taken by an airborne assault 2 days ago (15 Feb). Norway collapses in 3 days (16 Feb).
· It is now 17 Feb

You are the commander of the USS Enterprise CVBG, (CVN-65). Due to heightened tensions, your refit/re-fueling was rushed through and completed 8 months ahead of schedule. On the 12th of Feb, while completing your workup trials off of Puerto Rico, you were sent a FLASH message to precede north at best possible speed. In your Task Group are the USS Anzio CG 68, a brand new Ticonderoga class cruiser, another Tico, CG 63 Cowpens and the venerable Leahy class cruiser CG-17 Yarnell. Adding potency to the escort, two refurbished Spruance class DD’s, the Thorne and O’Bannon have just completed workups, both with the new Vertical Launch System (VLS) providing a very robust missile capability. Two FFG’s the Curts and Simpson round out the TG. Your air group is Carrier Air Wing 6, and it’s a bit of a mixed bag, you have some of the oldest aircraft in the fleet (A6-E’s) and 6 of the very newest F/A-18C capable of using the AIM-120 AMRAAM missiles, which proved very effective during a training run through.

The journey north was full of news, as the war developed your training became very serious. At dawn on the 15th as the TG passed Bermuda it went into a Communications Lockdown and later that day met up with a replenishment group. By dawn yesterday you were topped up with all the supplies and ammunition needed. AOE 3 Seattle remained with the TG, although its slower speed is a hindrance you cannot afford the escorts to break her away, she needs to be handy for emergency re-supply.

Just before midnight last night you received a warning order from CINCLANT informing you of some late developments – including the fall of Iceland. Your orders were to position the TG north east of Newfoundland and prepare for heavy engagement, several land based squadrons were placed under Operational Control of the TG and at 0200 this morning you held a communications check with 5 submarines that are also under your control.

A few minutes ago you were called to your communications room to receive orders.

Good Shooting and Godspeed Admiral!

Designer’s notes:

This is a very complex scenario so to assist the player – and to replicate routine operations at sea; there are a good number of missions already in play. The player can chose to use these or delete them as s/he wishes.

Please respect the initial ready times for aircraft. There are quite a few which are in Reserve (Available) load out with a long ready time, this is to replicate the staging of aircraft to forward bases and general maintenance.

Units designated SLOC (Sea Line of Communications) are intended for SLOC security and should remain in that task.

Casualty thresholds are recommended for some units. There are no actual penalties for exceeding these but if you wish to stick with the spirit of the design, you should place these squadrons on defensive CAP or parked once exceeded. Also there is also a call to withdraw a half squadron of older F/A-18C (non AMRAAM) midway through the first day. You should do so to make deck space for a more capable squadron which is made available to you; however, if your casualties are high an argument would be made to Fleet HQ to keep them and they will agree.

Over the first day of the battle, 24 more aircraft are made available to use on the CV, if you have not taken that many casualties you should consider putting some aircraft 'on the beach' or risk traffic jams on your flight deck.

Points are allotted for destruction of forces, major point loss will occur if CRAF airliners or NRR ships units are destroyed. The game ends if the Enterprise sinks.

V1.5 Changes:
-Dropped many ASW missions to improve performance -Removed escort from 24 Div convoy and set up a small ASW gp instead -Name changes to RAF ECM A/C -Changed Peter Velikiy to Frunze (did not change Varyag to older version, saw no difference in versions) -Moves some SOV ASW missions to more appropriate areas

V2 Changes:
-Updated to DB3000 Build 418 -Put Prosecution zones in for all sides -Adjusted a couple minor bits that I had been meaning to do

V2.1 Changes:
-Changed out the Frunze & Kalinin for a couple of Kirov's (Kept the Udaloy II for storyline reasons) -Sped up the readiness of the UK based fighters and EW -Added a Squadron of Phantom FGR-2s -Changed the PZ's for some MiG-31's, should get the ANG F-15's into more action up north

V2.2 Changes:
-Thinned out the MiG 31’s from up north -Moved the MiG 31’s to Kef and set up a couple surprises -Adjusted the CAP around Iceland which should make it a little more interesting to go for the deep strikes -Adjusted the LR Bmr missions somewhat, I think the LOCs in the South will need more attention from the player now -Turned off the ‘Engage Opportunity Targets’ for the Bmrs and gave them Prosecution zones instead. -spread the Sov jammers out a bit -Spruced up the SAM and AAA at Kef. Along with the adjusted CAP, this should defeat a single throw of TLAMs unless they are escorted in with AAW, SEAD and OECM. -Removed the Phantoms from the UK -Removed the Ch-53’s from the Seattle

Ver 2.3 Changes:
-Upgraded most of the 493rd FS and 11 Sqn RAF to Ace - thanks to their action in previous scenarios
-Sprinkled 1 or 2 Aces into each USN Ftr Sqns
-Adjusted the briefing to address: Command; Satellite; and Tanker concerns
-Updated to build 678 (man this game just gets better and better!) and DB3000 build 429
