Introduction
If you encounter a crash on startup, then you'll need to disable ShadowPlay from GeForce Experience before entering the game!
How to?
Open GeForce Experience, click on ShadowPlay in the top right corner, then click on the "switch" thingy, until all green lights are off. Exit both ShadowPlay and GeForce Experience.

Want to add a simply dumb fix that worked for me.

Go into add/remove programs in windows settings, and uninstall Ubisoft Connect.
Go back to Steam and launch Unity which will reinstall Connect.
Sign into the Ubisoft window that pops up. It will stop running after.
Click play again in Steam and it should boot.

but i like shadowplay as it gives me nvidia freestyle filters, which let me sharpen this overly soft and blurry game, and change its colors. it has never caused the game to crash, for me.

I have an AMD card, this doesn't help at all.

Try using ALT + Enter for windowed mode. If using reshade it messes with the steam overlay and can effect using controller too.
Boot up game in windowed mode and once the game is running you can full screen it again
