Northern Fury 10.4 - BUFF Stampede, 1994

Description
Northern Fury 10.4 BUFF Stampede
23 February, 1994

The new global war between East and West has been raging for a full week, the situation is stabilizing but violent clashes abound. The ground war in Europe is still undecided but NATO forces in CENTAG (Central Army Group) have blunted the main Soviet advance somewhat, while the air war over Germany has seen the loss of hundreds of NATO and probably thousands of WP aircraft. Conflicts in the Caribbean, Mediterranean, Persian Gulf and Indian Ocean have stabilized in NATO’s favour, both the Panama and Suez Canals remain open and navigable. In the Pacific; Japan, Taiwan and South Korea are virtually isolated but 7th Fleet is making a push with four CVBGs and the New Jersey to regain the initiative.

The US 2nd Fleet is now conducting its first major counter-attack. The 1st phase by 2 CVBGs attacking to gain air superiority around Iceland is complete. The 2nd phase, to close the airbases, conducted by 27th Tactical Fighter Wing on its transit to Europe last night. The 3rd phase occurred earlier today when the 2 CVBGs moved north again to conduct precision strike on C2 targets. Now it is time to bring in the heavy hitters and restore cave dwelling as an acceptable way of life for the Soviets on Iceland!

This scenario is playable by NATO:

You are to conduct a short, sharp bomb run of key facilities remaining on Iceland while transiting the 2nd Bomber Wing to bases in England. Your bomber wing is comprised of 3 Squadrons of B-52’s and has been augmented by a Squadron each of B-1’s, EF-111. F-16 Blk 40 and several squadrons of tankers. As well as support from elements of 2nd Marine Air Group (2MAG), and a U-2, the ‘Spirit of Missouri' one of 8 operational B-2’s will make that types combat debut (in the Northern Fury World).

Designer’s Notes:

This is the twentieth scenario of a campaign. See the Northern Fury background document for further insight on the background and happenings so far. The key nuggets
· Cold War continued, no thaw in relations. Germany still divided, WP still alive and doing very well.
· The 3rd World war started 13 Feb. The Warsaw Pact forces led by the Soviet Union attacked NATO and other nations on a global scale, the main blow was in Western Europe fighting erupted in the Pacific, Caribbean, Middle East and North Africa. India has declared a separate war with Pakistan, North Korea attacked Southwards in an apparently independent move and Argentina is threatening the Falklands again (but has not attacked).

In earlier scenarios to this battle set, you found that the defences in North Norway have collapsed, the Soviet Northern Fleet has put to sea, and Soviet submarines are inflicting damage along the US Eastern seaboard, Iceland is now in Soviet hands, and an attempt has been made to interdict the Sea and Air Lines of Communications between North America and Europe.

• BUFF is abbreviated slang for the B-52 and stands for Big Ugly Fat Fellow (the 2nd F has several versions)
• You should turn 'special messages' ON.
• Please respect the initial ready times for aircraft, this represents designed delays that both balance the scenario and paint the picture of the ongoing conflict.
• Points are allotted or deducted for losses.
• Many of your forces in this scenario start at fictitious forward bases. This is done to reduce the burden of constant A2A refueling which would be required if all aircraft started in North America and had to fly all the way to the UK while conducting a major operation enroute.
