Report a translation problem
1) Unfortunately, not all ROMs store the dialogue in plain text, so you must get lucky. That was my case with the whole Ecco series.
2) You must respect the amount of characters; you can't make a phrase longer or shorter than the original. This happens because changing the size of the messages messes with the ability of the program to locate their addresses in the memory.
None of these problems are insurmountable, but I'm afraid that they require skills greater than my own to solve.
Vito: Thanks! Modifying Ecco's ROM this way was easy because all the game's dialogue is written in plain text inside the file; I just had to replace it with new text using a text editor. I'm afraid more complex hacks are out of my reach.
Also, how do you make mods like these for this game?
(and yes, I do legally own a Genesis copy of Ecco)
