AA Contest Europa - Religion Addon

Description
Contest Europa – Religion Addon

Updated for 1.17.x.x

Description:
This mod expands the vanilla religion system to include new, immersive content. It builds off of the great religion content in Extended Vanilla Experience, via the EVE Religion Lite mod, and adds a completely reworked religion conversion system.

Expanding on the vanilla religion conversion system, which is largely based upon the number of provinces in a nation which have a certain religion, Contest Europa Religion Addon introduces geopolitical and strategic considerations into the mix.
The mod allows for many new conversion mechanisms and dramatically expands the criteria for AI and human choice to convert taking into account state vs territory, primary culture vs other, military, technology and development power ratios among many other factors.

Contest Europa Religion Addon aims to:
  • Make religion a more interesting and immersive aspect of gameplay
  • Present a more comprehensive religion experience by elevating political considerations and making choices have more significant consequences
  • Liberate some of the vanilla restrictions to create a more flexible mechanism that provides more variety and choice

Explanation:
Contest Europa Religion Addon disables much of the vanilla religion conversion system and replaces it with new one.
Conversion now happens through one of the below events and decisions
  1. Large states will threaten other states to convert or be converted by force. Threatened states must choose whether to convert and improve their relationship with the larger state in an attempt to defray tension or rebuke the threat and face the possibility of war.
  2. Smaller states understand their precarious situation when faced with larger neighbors who follow a different religion. They have the opportunity to try and appease their neighbors by converting to their faith.
  3. When a nation has poor relations with its neighbors despite sharing the same faith they will sometimes choose to change the political dynamic by elevating a minority religion and trying to forge ties with other nearby nations of the same new religion.
  4. States in certain threatened circumstances can adopt religious nationalism, making their faith identity part of their national identity. This will make it harder for other states to threaten them with religion and give them bonuses to repel invaders.
  5. States may still decide to change religion based upon their religious make up (how many provinces of a certain religion). However, now the calculation is larger and more precise. States will weigh the relative number of provinces of each religion that are states (not territories) against the relative number of provinces of their current state religion. States also weigh a large range of other factors including their stability, presence of religious nationalism, the state or another state’s control of different holy sites and government type. A state considers whether or not this religion has spread into its core territories where its primary population lives or if the religion is only present on the fringes. Different religions have a different feel with some such as orthodox being much more reluctant to convert. This event effectively replaces the vanilla convert religion feature for the AI.
  6. Human players (not AI) can opt to change their religion via decision. In general religion conversion is available if a state has a sufficient amount of provinces of the target religion or it or another state controls key religious holy sites (for example all Christian nations can convert to Orthodoxy if an Orthodox state controls Rome and Rome has been converted to Orthodoxy).

When you put these factors together you get a nuanced system that better captures the realities of religion as function of both popular will and political expedience across history then is present in vanilla. There are a number of new mechanisms but they are not overpowered or overused.
The changes are experienced over the duration of a campaign as religion feels more immersive. Actions and choices related to religion have a larger impact on the game and each nations both influences and is influenced by other nations. If Coptic Ethiopia conquers Constantinople then many other Christian nations, who perhaps control Coptic provinces, may consider converting to Coptic Christianity.
This is a lot of fun, I hope you enjoy it.

Contest Europa Religion Addon is a fairly complex mod, but works smoothly for the user. You will not need a detailed explanation prior to enjoying the mod.
However, for those interested, I go into details about the math and mechanics of how this mod works on this linked thread

Compatibility:
Compatible with most mods that do not radically alter game mechanics or add very similar content.
This mod requires no DLC but can be used with all DLC
This mod is built off of and REQUIRES you to have EVE Religion Lite.
This mod is built specifically to work with Contest Europa, however you can probably play it without it (untested).
You cannot use this with another large comprehenisve mod such as EVE or Extended Timeline

Credit and Thanks:
Many thanks to Daniel, the author of EVE. This mod is built off the great religion content he has given us and would not be possible without his work.

Funny Name Explanation and Modding Note:
This mod has the bizarre AA at the beginning of its name because this mod acts as a patch for EVE Religion Lite and the AA ensures the patch works and the game selects the correct files. I am assuming that the engine reads the first alphabetical instance of the override of a particular file and then uses that regardless of it there are others loaded. I tried all manner of different ways to get the patch's combined file to be read. This was the only one that worked. So I'm stuck with a bizarre mod name.

Yes, everything will be updated. I'm working on how to modify the institution system right now. It's taking me some time to figure out what I like.

Glad you enjoy the mod.

I altered the trigger a little bit to add more variety. Intention was to allow for an early league if you had a number of Protestant electors. That is too early, maybe need to add a date criteria.

When Religous League is supposed to trigger? It's 1487 in my game and it just triggered o.o.

Well it's really something of a patch for EVE Religion Lite intended for use with CE. It has to load before both of those mods so the right files will be overwritten.
