Soundtrack Overhuaul

Description
Battlezone 98 Redux Mod Competition. This mod replaces the entire soundtrack of the game with an all new one.

The purpose is to make the music something you don't just turn off, or forget even exists. Instead I wanted the soundtrack to actually add something to the game. So I wrote and arranged all fifteen tracks to be my take on what the Battlezone soundtrack would've been if it were released in 2016.

Disclaimers:
-The menu song is unchangeable. It's coded far deeper than the rest are.
-When the songs play is unchangeable. As far as I know, it's completely random.

This is a bug that a bunch of soundtrack mods have encountered, Deus - we think it's a playback bug with the game but we haven't figured out precisely which files cause it yet. Everything plays back fine in VLC and the bit-/sample rates aren't anything unusual.

Oh dear, I think you need to check how some of your tracks sound in-game, Chives, I'm hearing a lot of popping and skips in the music when playing the game. : /

The image was edited by Nielk1 for the Rise of the Black Dogs Decompilation Project, and I very much doubt he has any issue with you using it. It was a tongue-in-cheek jab, that's all :)

Not an accusation, by the way; I use sample libraries like that quite heavily in my own work, and it's nice to get an idea of what extent other musicians use them to. If you're interested in a techy sound, might I suggest looking up the material put out by Sonic Mayhem and Celldweller?

The image was from the base game, but it was edited by Ded10c, should maybe change it just so that it's more unique. Maybe use this [vignette3.wikia.nocookie.net] instead?

@Ded10c, I assumed that you just got the picture from the base game. If it actually belongs to you, I can change it. And thank you for the help with the menu. I understand what you're saying now.

What are you asking, though? That sounds an awful lot like an accusation. But to answer your question as best I can, about 38% of the total mix are loops, and all from evolve. I did that to get a more techy sound. But all the orchestration and melodies and everything else were done completely dry in that respect. To be honest, I got pretty frustrated by the end that so few of evolve's sound bank could be found outside of the loops. I think I did a pretty good job, considering.

@The Deus Ex, please do. I could even write you something for it specificly if you want.

@Headcrab Addict, I've been using cubase for years. Though I haven't tried anything else, I've never seen a need to. Its the one that Hans Zimmer uses and recommends, if that means anything.

Just noticed a few samples from Evolve Mutations in track 11 - if you had to put a number on it, how much of this pack would you say is original composition vs arrangement of samples?

If I wanted to use this music in a custom campaign, would I be free to do so as long as I was sure to credit you? I love this music.

Yes, there is. Take a look at my Rise of the Black Dogs Re-Orchestrated mod (which I notice you've pinched the image from, you sneaky bugger) and you'll see that it replaces the menu music as well - just not immediately. You'll need to play a map and go back to the menu for the music there to take.

@Headcrab: I too am using Cubase. The Re-Orchestrated soundtrack was created in Cubase 5 using Edirol Orchestral, though I'm on 8.5 now.

Edirol Orchestral has sadly been discontinued, which is a shame because its samples fit Battlezone perfectly - not completely realistic, but just close enough to match the original soundtracks.

@Chives i'm interested in makinig digital music (all kinds of genres), but i've not worked in a real DAW yet, which is why i want to know what other composers use.

TRO is The Red Odyssey which is an expansion pack DLC to the original game. It had a separate soundtrack that was styled more like an 80's synth action soundtrack and I think it'd be cool to see something in the vein of that either replicated and remastered, or something similar.
