Intro
This basic guide the community will improve on as we go along, don't be afraid to leave feedback and bugs (preferably with your solution but if you don't have one drop a line).

Here's the original page; http://skse.silverlock.org/

SKSE does not work with Skyrim: Special Edition.
You must use the old Skyrim installation for SKSE

If you want to install SKSE with Skyrim SE you must use the non-Steam installer
This is because Bethesda disabled Steam Workshop for Skyrim SE, which means you can't upload a mod of the game, which SKSE is.
Check that it's hooked
Once you're at the main menu press ~, #, or ` depending on which nationality keyboard you have to bring up the console. Then type GetSKSEVersion and press return (enter):
If console replies with a version number you have SKSE installed.
If console replies with an error you do not have SKSE installed.
Install it in the right place
Yes ladies and gentlemen, if you don't install SKSE to the correct Steam library then it won't be able to load the files even though the SKSE launcher will correctly launch Skyrim.

Or if you only have Skyrim Special Edition installed then SKSE from Steam will not work with it currently.

1. Confirm you have original Skyrim installed

2. Simply check in the Files tab of Properties of both Skyrim and SKSE to make sure they are on the same drive at least.

3. Double check the install location. Click Browse Local Files under the Files tab of the Properties window of either SKSE or Skyrim. You should now see the default Skyrim folder as well as the extra skse_loader.exe files under
x:\[Program Files\]Steam\steamapps\common\skyrim

Reinstall it
It's a known issue that over time mods go out of sync and old files don't get updated or corrupted.

First try using Steam to uninstall and reinstall SKSE.

Check that the core game launches and that it's only SKSE crashing it. If your core game crashes when launching using the Skyrim shortcut and not the SKSE shortcut you'll need to reinstall Skyrim (This is better than verifying in this case as there are so many disparate files).
"Please update Skyrim"
Based on this page, compare your Skyrim core version to these SKSE builds:
Originally posted by https://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/939725-skse-please-update-to-the-latest-version-of-skyrim-launcher/:
From the SKSE page:

Current release build (1.6.9, compatible with runtime 1.8.151.0.*): http://skse.silverlock.org/beta/skse_1_06_09.7z (readme)
Current beta build (1.6.11, compatible with beta runtime 1.9.29.0.*): http://skse.silverlock.org/beta/skse_1_06_11.7z

You'll also get "Please update Skyrim" if you rename SkyrimSE.exe to TESV.exe. You cannot get Skyim Special Edition to work with SKSE by renaming the .exe-s

This dude had messed around with his SKSE installation, by restoring it to default it worked

THANK YOU!!!
I had the same problem (but didn't reinstalled, there just came the message "Please update to the lastest version of Skyrim" after installing SKSE.)
But then I renamed to the original name (before I renamed cause in the download of SKSE there was an instructions-file who said I should rename it and put in the .ini file).
Then I deleted the text ('RuntimeName=TES_.exe') in the .ini file and it worked!
My mod who needs SKSE works now too!

One other person managed to install SKSE and Skyrim either separately or twice; https://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/2221089-skse-problem-please-update-to-the-latest-version-of-skyrim/

Lastly, this person set SKSE_loader.exe to "Run as administrator" and that seemed to help; http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/615805-the-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim/66309362

Summary
In summary we will have tried confirming that it's installed, confirming it's installed in the right place, and reinstalling it.

If it still doesn't work then ask here or on the Discussion section :)
SKSE for Skyrim Special Edition
SKSE is being remade for Skyrim SE. Manually install it.
http://www.pcgamer.com/skyrim-script-extender-64-for-skyrim-special-edition-is-in-alpha/

When they update the Steam version I'll update here, in the meantime;
https://steamhost.cn/news/?appids=489830

The original site with the SKSE64 variant for Skyrim SE (manual installer) is here;
http://skse.silverlock.org/

Because Bethesda blocked Steam Workshop for Skyrim Special Edition, it is probably impossible to upload SKSE for SSE to Steam;

Manual SKSE installation
Lastly you can skip off using the Steam distribution of SKSE and instead download it from the SKSE website https://skse.silverlock.org/

Then follow the following guide to get SKSE to work

Thanks to Nightmare
Linux installation
Many thanks to FennecTheFox for finding this thread that discusses the following installation steps;
  1. Right-click on Skyrim's entry in your library, select "Properties"
  2. Click the "Local Files" tab, then the "Browse Local Files..." button
  3. Backup or delete "SkyrimLauncher.exe". I just renamed it and added ".bak" to the end.
  4. Copy "skse_loader.exe" and rename it to "SkyrimLauncher.exe"
  5. Boot (regular) skyrim from steam launch, NOT FROM SKSE LAUNCHER PAGE ON STEAM OR FROM skse_loader.exe!
It's important to back your files up in case you mess this up

@HogBassHunter1985: I'm right there with ya brother. Be 69 on May 26th, and I've lost my mind trying to get Skyrim to work again. Played it with the Museum mod couple years ago, and now can't even get the base Skyrim AE to run anymore. Somebody fix this crap, please.

(Windows, Original Skyrim (not Special Edition). )

At some point between mid-January and late April 2025, the Steam version stopped working entirely for me. I'd bring up the console, type GetSKSEVersion, error. Tried reinstalling SKSE from Steam, that didn't work. I uninstalled the Steam version of SKSE, went to NexusMods and manually downloaded SKSE, then launched it directly from the skse_loader application. That seems to be working now.

The only thing that runs as administrator is skse_loader.

Hope this helps somebody else. It was a frustrating couple of hours for me.

But how do I make the steam overlay and achievements work?

Couldn't get it to work after adding it via Steam installer and then running it from Steam (GetSKSEVersion didn't work).

What got it working was to enable "Run as Administrator" for the two files:

* skse_loader and
* skse_steam_boot,

then creating a shortcut to skse_loader on my desktop and running it from that. GetSKSEVersion showed version number in Skyrim after.

Every time that I try opening my magic menu the game crashes. Does anybody have a fix?

Just makes me happy that I don't use any mod managers and manually build my mod lists. No problems with SKSE or any mods at all.
Castor96Raven 27 Nov, 2022 @ 8:45am
also if you have anniversary edition, it has issues with sky ui, and vortex mod manager fails to use skse, and subsequently all mods associated with either. i get a message to "update skse to the current anniversary edition" which, like, duh, but i did that, and i still have the same problem. something is trying to run the older version, and making it fail to detect the version i installed.

is it because i have both oldrim and SSE:AE installed? cause id rather have both incase i have to abandon SSE.
Mr, spud 20 Nov, 2022 @ 2:58pm
so basically if you have special edition you're screwed
