It looks like an Atari game on steroids

@enlowjackarron It's important for the visual style the game was made in. But removing it creates a new visual style that some players may prefer or at least want to try.

i gotta say this is an impressive idea at first i was like i dunno then i played from zone 1-3 on green hill and honestly i was impressed i wanted to keep playing the only reason i didn't is i had to say something about it this is fantastic its like playing an upgraded sega master system that was more than capable of running sonic's newer mega drive stuff on it it honestly felt like a somewhat different game i would love to see this on 2 or 3 if you ever do please let me know just a suggestion its allot of fun

Shading is important, why remove it?

its a bit of both
some of the sprites are changed like Green Hill Zone's Tile set while most of the color pallets are changed to have no shades

i know this is old now, but out of curiosity does this change the sprites or the color pallets?

Looks like an NES Game (not that that's bad)

I get the idea behind it, but it just visually looks kinda gross
