The reason for doing this is that most players already know of the key bonuses that work well for each victory route, so by only mentioning the stuff specific to the civ, it saves time writing the guide and cuts down the amount of repeated content.
Warrior monks have 35 combat strength comparing to swordsman's 36, looking closer they have
2 positive changes : 1.iron/gold/production free 2. one more movement point.
1 negative change : does NOT benefit from great general
2. one more movement point. This firstly compensate the distance they need to travel from temple/city center to front line, secondly increase their mobility/survivability for maneuver/upgrade. Their first upgrade 2x flank bonus needs maneuver, second upgrade which +10 combat strength in ALL SITUATIONS need survivability.
In summary, warrior monks are faster, iron/gold/production free swordsman for players who devotes early game into religious infrastructure. Russia seems a good fit.
- Trade routes now provide pressure for your religion
- A few new beliefs have been added to the game that go well with Russia's playstyle
- Some other general religious changes (e.g. religious units are on their own layer and may pass through non-religious units)
- The Angkor Wat wonder (requires the Khmer/Indonesia DLC) can help you grow your entire empire - particularly handy for tundra cities
Now for someone who's going for a religious victory, It's basically impossible to argue for any worship building over Mosques, but I think that Cathedrals would make a great backup.
But for cultural victories Cathedrals are my first choice. Consider that Russia is often swimming in GWAMs. In order to house all those Great Works, you need enough cities. It's better to settle earlier than later, which may mean delaying other concerns (like theatre squares) because of producing settlers and units/walls to defend your large territory and commercial districts/harbors for trade routes, on top of the Lavra of course. Cathedrals allow your early artists to do work boosting your culture while you lay a strong foundation for the rest of the game. And eventually you'll be grateful for all those Cathedral Slots just so you can fit all your Great Art somewhere.
On the civics tree, beelines work best if you're playing a cultural game. You can try and head for Cultural Heritage early and use the culture bonus to catch up on the other civics.
