The find algorithms are completely different. For this locator, I find map objects of the specific type. This type includes artifacts, but also garbage like floating ice on Neptune, or the two statues in the Mars catacombs. Then the E2 checks the physical dimensions of the found objects, and filters out those that do not have the size of the artifacts. The artifacts are very slightly differently sized, the E2 uses these differences to identify which is which. More importantly, the artifacts are located only once.
Finding players is actually much simpler, you make a list of them upon placing the E2, then update that list every time someone connects or disconnects. You remove yourself from the list so you won't see a marker on yourself, you add data like HP and armor, and make sure that markers are not visible over dead players. Basically, that's it.
Nah. This thing is totally different from a player marker, it'd be easier to make a new E2 from scrach than to modify this one. Maybe I'll make it some day, but I'm not a big fan of uploading things that can be used in PvP.
As far as I know, no way to duplicate them, as they are map objects, and not simple props. This also made finding them rather difficult, as you can see in the E2 code.
Besides, where's the fun in cheating?
You bring them to Earth (the starting planet, where the screenshot was made), and place them in the Combine Thumper-like machine's 4 corners. From the screenshot's point of view, the machine is to the right and slightly to the back, at 4 or 5 o'clock, about 30 meters away. Once all 4 are placed, the machine can be turned on, which will activate a teleporter right above Earth, in space. Enter the teleport, I won't spoil the rest, although it's not a big deal.
