Lasers, lasers EVERYWHERE!
4 items
Description
Difficulty: Very Hard

Duration: between 20 minutes and nine nine nine nine nine ni-

Required to solve the test:
- basic understanding of portals
- advanced understanding of laser redirection
- a well working brain
- outside-the-box thinking

Not required: (so don't even try!)
- mad portal skills (bunnyhopping, air strafing, insane cube throwing, etc...)
- the usage of glitches/bugs/cheats

It's a rather difficult map, but it certainly is possible, I playtested it a lot, so good luck and enjoy! :D

Every feedback is welcome!

UPDATES: made the chamber less breakable (7 times), so hopefully there's no other way to break it!

Maybe I should give you guys some smaller hints.
0. WARNING! ONLY LOOK AT THESE HINTS IF YOU ARE TOTALLY STUCK!
1. You can get a second Redirection Cube in the "main room" using only the cube you're given and your portals.
2. You can get the third Redirection Cube using the 2 other cubes and your portals.
3. Lasers can go through portals multiple times.
4. The button that respawns the cube and disables the death laser is a reset button in case of failure.
5. The glass walls after bouncing up using the blue gel is a small observation area which may or may not help.
6. As weird as it sounds, the Weighted Storage Cube has a part in the laser puzzle.

FINAL HINT, WARNING, ONLY READ IT IF YOU ARE TOTALLY LOST AND WANT TO GIVE UP ON FIGURING IT ALL OUT YOURSELF! (Final hint unlocked by UsernameNotFound_404 by completing the puzzle.

7. The laser needs to go through 4 Redirection Cubes to complete the test, but you can only interact with 3 of them.

"To start preparing for human testing again, I checked an old suggestion box. The number one request? Less deadly tests." - Made the chamber less deadly in an update, so while you're playing the chamber you may see that it's less deadly than the screenshots of it!

@SpielSatzFail thank you for your long feedback, I really appreciate it! :D This was my first map ever made, so it can probably explain why it's so tedious. When I was only watching portal 2 videos and didn't have a game yet, I had no idea what is good about a puzzle, and I started planninf some tricks before I bought it that would make it hard. Unfortunately it turned out being a little finicky when I look back at it now, but back then I was really proud of it. About the walkthrough: maybe I'll add one of playthroughs from the comments in my description.
And yes, the lasers can be annoying, I wish there was a laser magnet that would make the laser hit the inlet first try if you are trying it the right, but unfortunately there isn't. Thank you for the feedback and thanks for playing! :D

Pt.3
...speaking of tedious, it's so annoying if you have to hit the exact laser angle again and again in order to being able to repeat an action, e.g. in the end in case you have to reposition the weighted & laser cube up at the glass platform.
Luckily I already knew the mechanics of hitting a laser cube inside a dropper , but hardly anybody who doesn't already know about it can even guess this...
Finally, how about a walkthrough video? I mean there are some in the comments, but it's always nice to have an official one linked at the description, especially if it's a chamber THAT confusing... Anyway, thanks for your effort, you did an incredible job, it's just overambitious imo.
In some way, I know what I'm talking about ^^

Pt.2
Generally, I very much like the visual design of the chamber!
Generally, I very much DISlike the way of hitting laser receivers in narrow angles, it just doesn't feel right (piston platform & opening the "moon" pedestral button). I as the player am experimenting until something works out. It's in the same way boring and unsatisfying. The idea with shooting the laser multiple times through the same portal(s) came by accident, I NEVER enjoy something like that.
Getting the weighted cube out of the rear room by shooting the laser from the other side / from inside is a good idea. Unfortunately you can't immediately see and barely hear the effect, so I had to do several turns which was just tedious!

I have mixed emotions on this. First of all I appreciate everything that is not front page shit but really hard to figure out. This one actually kept me motivated for about an hour(!); I as an experienced player, but obviously not a pro, am proud of having solved it with only looking at one hint (no.6 - which I was already assuming). BUT... unfortunately a cannot give a thumbs up because this puzzle is so weird in many ways that in my opinion it doesn't meet the requierements of a good Portal puzzle. It's nothing that is based on the rules of Portal, instead it uses several twisted mechanics which an average player can't even find. I saw them on my way through hundreds of community maps so I tried them out here, but I don't really like much of them :-( Just because it is possible it doesn't mean it's legit.
To be continued...

@hestia.is.bestia I don't agree with you at all.
The puzzle is certainly tricky. So I think "Hard" is fitting.
And Technically knowing all possible moves in a puzzle always makes it linear. Therefore I don't see this as decent criticism.
There is only one "obscure" move in the puzzle which introduces a tricky mechanic not everyone immediately realizes. The puzzle is not hoping for it not to be discovered. It is made to show this to people.
I think a bad way of making a puzzle hard is having an obvious solution which is either stupidly "hard" to execute or requires extreme precision.
So overall in my opinion this level isn't made "hard" in a bad way.
I think it has a tricky solution and requires thinking and is not unnecessarily frustrating, due to obvious solutions that aren't executeable - it can get frustrating because not figuring out the solution, though, which in retrospect would make it hard in the correct puzzle way though.

@RectorRocks Thanks for playing my map! :) I watched your playthough, and liked it! Sorry for the signage, but I didn't know how else I could've done that, with antlines it would've looked really weird.

Very finicky solution with unclear signage.

@lapicidas no, it's not possible to get in there, that's just an "OR" connection because I made this map without beemod, so I had to make a manual "OR" connection
I'm glad you liked it, thank you for playing it :D

Done. I like this map! Good brain-effort. Thumbs up.
At the end I grapped the companian cube, just for fun.
Attention Spoiler!! Screenshot of the solution at the end :

In your Top-View of the Chamber there is a dark room at the right side from the blue funnel. It seems there is a laser inside. Is it possible to get there, I cannot find a way.
hestia.is.bestia 6 Apr, 2017 @ 10:18am
Solved, the "puzzle" without referring to any hints. There was a lot of clutter with the angled panels and many signages which were missing or completely obscured. I can't say I liked any of the ideas used. Especially the last one. It really wasn't clever and just relied on a gimmicky usage of the cube dropper.

The puzzle's difficulty was killed by how linear it was. I would rate it very easy in terms of logical difficulty. Spawn cube 1, then spawn cube 2, then spawn cube 3, then spawn cube 4, then exit. That isn't a logical puzzle. "Very hard" is streching it. If knowing all the possible moves in a puzzle reduces the puzzle to linear steps of obvious moves then it isn't hard at all. Making obscure moves hoping that someone might not see them is not only the wrong way of making a puzzle difficult, it also makes the puzzle less fun. The fun part of any puzzle is figuring out the correct sequence of moves which would lead to a solution. It has nothing to do with finding obscube moves.
