20 years ago I met a grandmother of a friend I knew, her husband had died at Stalingrad, when you walked into her house you were transported back to those desperate years.

She had photos of him still in a German uniform, of him holding his newborn son, and their wedding photos aptly placed around the house, and no other photos were present. The decor and the couch that I sat on had the familiar pattern of those days.

He got permission to see his newborn for a short time and was shipped off the line, only to return to die in the cold hell of Stalingrad a few days later.
