25MW Mercuric Thermoelectric Reactor

Descriere
Reactor with a number of features that distinguish it as safer and more realistic than typical player designs.

- Criticality constant is centred on a moderate margin.
- Moderator comes pre-graphitised (diamond will decompose into this at operating temps).
- Heavy metal coolants are less prone to boiling and overpressure than sodium; their density mitigates gamma radiation.
- Silicon nitride inner pump is less reactive than pure carbon and still has excess strength to withstand mechanical stress at high temps.
- Neutron reflector brings radiation levels down to a point where ablative Li-6 shields are far from necessary.
- Outer coolant is water, potentially forming part of a crew's life support loop.
- 2000K outlet won't sublimate carbon radiators in vacuum (~2200K limit).
- Thermocouple avoids use of extremely rare metals.

its just so poorly designed. i love it

@Instant Ramen +

The scaling (in terms of reactor mass vs power) is actually slightly less than linear. For example, Apophys's 1, 10, 100 MW reactors are 14.6, 127, 1060 kg.

@dolium

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/46/Carbon_basic_phase_diagram.png This phase diagram of carbon suggests that at the ~2400 K core temp of this reactor, >100 MPa of pressure (1000 atmospheres) would be required to keep the diamond metastable, which I do not think is feasible to contain longterm, especially at this temperature.

Yes.

So, you simply have to upscale all of the stuff in the reactor?
Seems doable

@dolium Can't say I know. However the change from diamond to graphite is an actual phase transition and not a interfacial development like metal oxidation, so once conditions are met the entire structure could change at once.

@ThatRedGuy As far as I know, yes; reactors scale linearly and are only limited by manufacturing ability.

Is it possible to have a larger reactor with more power ouput whilst also being realistic?

Very impressive, thank you for sharing it with us.
