An absolute classic among commuter trains.
The EMD F40PH arose in the 1970s following a need from Amtrak for modern, working locomotives, after the rather sad preformance of the GE P30CH and EMD SDP40F. Basically a GP40 in a cowled body with Head-End Power, the F40Ph
instantly became a classic, with many sold to both Amtrak and commuter railroads.

The most common configuration for them in commuter service for a long while was hauling a string of gallery cars - themselves, the standard commuter bilevel in North America for 3 decades. This configuration ran in Chicago, under Metra's banner, with Nashville, the Virginia Railway Express, and with Caltrain in San Francisco.

Despite Amtrak retiring the F40PH, many see second and even third lives with commuter operators throughout North America.

Detail #1 has Stainless Steel gallery cars, while Detail #2 has carbon steel.
