Update: 27 May, 2022 @ 6:39pm

Version 1.2.2: Balance Update
Slightly increased range of Codex Umbra attack. The previous range was too short to attack Terrorbeaks without getting hit, particularly on servers with any degree of lag.

Update: 25 May, 2022 @ 9:18am

Version 1.2.1: Balance Update
Introduced balance changes to make nightmare fuel farming less trivial for Maxwell, while still letting him dispatch shadow creatures easily:
  • Removed chance to generate nightmare fuel when attacking shadow creatures with the Codex Umbra.
  • Maxwell's damage increase against shadows now only applies when attacking with the Codex Umbra.
  • Killing shadow creatures with the Codex Umbra will restore sanity like normal.

Update: 25 May, 2022 @ 8:56am

Version 1.2.0.2: Hotfix
Fixed a bug that gave Maxwell invincibility after upgrading his Codex Umbra at a Prestihatitator or Shadow Manipulator.

Update: 23 May, 2022 @ 9:30pm

Version 1.2.0.1: Hotfix
Fixed bug causing server to crash when using recall.

Version 1.2: "Secrets of the Codex" Update
This update implements a number of changes based on the feedback we've received so far. A large focus was put on Maxwell's affinity with shadow magic and giving the Codex Umbra more utility in combat. The gifs below were downsized to save room in the changelog, but the mod description has been updated with full-sized versions.

New Shadow Magic/Codex Umbra Features

Offensive Shadow Magic
  • The Codex Umbra is now a medium ranged weapon, and attacking with it equipped will make Maxwell cast an offensive shadow spell on his target. This attack takes a little over a second to charge, and while it's charging Maxwell's target is slowed by 70% (but not small creatures). It deals 50 damage, ignoring Maxwell's melee damage modifier, and has a cooldown of 5 seconds (visible on the Codex Umbra à la Wanda's pocketwatch items).
  • Shadow Siphon has been removed in place of the Codex Umbra attack above. Attacking shadow-based enemies with the Codex Umbra has a chance to siphon some nightmare fuel from them. Each attack with the Codex Umbra also reduces the sanity reward that an enemy may give upon being killed.

Codex Umbra Conjuring
  • Maxwell's mastery over shadow magic allows him to use the Codex Umbra to conjure magic items from the beginning of the game, crafting them with a hefty sanity fee.
  • The sanity fee required in conjuring depends on whether the conjured magic item requires a Prestihatitator (tier 1 magic) or Shadow Manipulator (tier 2 magic).
  • By studying the Codex Umbra next to a Prestihatitator or Shadow Manipulator, Maxwell can increase his mastery of shadow magic and permanently decrease the sanity and ingredient costs of conjuring. When he approaches a Prestihatitator for the first time with his Codex Umbra in hand, he will eliminate the sanity penalty when crafting tier 1 magic items, permanently reduce their crafting costs, and then also reduce the sanity penalty for crafting tier 2 magic items. Doing the same with a Shadow Manipulator will eliminate the sanity costs and reduce the crafting costs for ALL magic items conjured via the Codex Umbra.

Other Modifications

Codex Umbra Changes
  • The Codex Umbra will no longer disappear after reaching 0% durability, it will simply stop working. It can be refueled with nightmare fuel for 25% durability each.
  • In line with this refuel rate, the nightmare fuel required to craft a new Codex Umbra has been increased to 4.
  • All Codex Umbra functions will use a small amount of its durability, including conjuring shadow puppets and magic items.

Shadow Puppet Changes
  • Shadow Servants are now crafted with 2 ropes, and 4 twigs instead of a backpack.
  • Slightly improved the combat AI of Shadow Duelists and Sentries. They will only attempt to kite if the enemy is actively targeting them or they are one hit away from death. Sentries also won't try to attack spider dens or pacified spiders, unless you do.
  • Commanding Shadow Duelists to attack no longer costs a flat amount of sanity. Instead, each Shadow Duelist that is fighting inflicts a passive sanity drain on Maxwell, and they will stop attacking if Maxwell reaches 0 sanity. The default drain is -10 sanity/min per Duelist, but like other costs this can be changed in the mod settings. This new overtime cost is reflected in the "Command to Attack" tooltip.
  • Decreased the default sanity cost for commanding Shadow Servants to pick up items (now -1 sanity) and harvest plants (now -3 sanity).

Maxwell Changes
  • Maxwell's maximum sanity has been increased to 250. This won't let him regenerate sanity faster, but it gives him more of a bank at the beginning of the game and lets him worry less about wasting sanity while doing other things.
  • In line with his new mastery over shadow magic (and the replacement of his shadow siphon ability), Maxwell now has a flat 2x damage bonus when attacking shadow-based enemies. This means that with his new Codex Umbra attack, he will deal 100 damage to shadow creatures.

Update: 21 May, 2022 @ 2:49pm

Added support for DST Minus API as an in-game mod dependency. Maxwell will only complain when chopping, mining, or hammering (not all work). Added hammer workmultiplier. Adjusted complaining strings to make more sense depending on the action.

Update: 18 May, 2022 @ 6:37pm

Removed Maxwell's speed penalty when performing generic actions.

Update: 17 May, 2022 @ 9:39pm

Changed default mine and dig command costs. Restored full health regen to shadow puppets.

Update: 17 May, 2022 @ 5:04pm

Updated various strings. Added configuration option for command cost scaling, with the default being no scaling. Only one shadow puppet of each type will chatter while working (to prevent spam).
