Version 2.2: Minor Update
This update mainly consists of cosmetic improvements, but there are a few gameplay changes as well.

The Codex Umbra attack has been refined further:
  • Instead of reusing the channel animation again, the attack now uses a slightly sped-up shadow version of the Wickerbottom book animation and implements a new model of the Codex Umbra to go along with it (finally!)
  • The cast time for the attack has been lengthened slightly to match the new animation, but the range of the attack has been increased to compensate.
  • Killing Terrorbeaks with the Codex Umbra now has a +40% chance to drop a second nightmare fuel. Crawling Horrors remain at +25%.

In addition, when the Codex menu is open Maxwell will been seen visibly reading it (while standing still). This new animation is also used when Maxwell upgrades his Codex at a Prestihatitator/Shadow Manipulator, instead of the odd-looking Wurt read animation.

Update: 14 Aug, 2022 @ 12:11pm

Version 2.1.1: Hotfix
  • Fixed a crash when shadow puppets try to avoid explosions.
  • Commands from the minion menu (Codex UI) are now instant while mounted to avoid animation glitch.

Update: 14 Aug, 2022 @ 10:53am

Version 2.1: Balance Update
  • Shadow puppets can now be imprisoned/released during combat.
  • Codex Umbra attack now properly deducts sanity upon use.
  • Codex Umbra attack wind up time has been increased slightly and it can now be used on normal enemies again, simply dealing spear damage (34) with no slowdown.
  • Fixed a crash when commanding Shadow Servants to harvest farm plants.

Update: 10 Aug, 2022 @ 7:06am

Version 2.0.3: Hotfix
Fixed a bug causing shadow puppets to occasionally try to link to the player before the player has been created when loading in. This caused the shadow puppets not to appear on the Codex UI, and could also crash clients in a multiplayer game.

Update: 9 Aug, 2022 @ 8:33am

Version 2.0.2: Hotfix
  • Changed the deprecated fish in the Shadow Sailor recipe to a Smolt Fry.
  • Fixed a bug causing Shadow Servants and Sailors to not resume working after running away from an enemy.

  • Fixed crash caused by outdated mods that add additional container widgets.

Update: 8 Aug, 2022 @ 8:57pm

Version 2.0.1: Hotfix
Fixed potential crash when using the Codex Umbra attack on a Terrorbeak.

Version 2.0: "Shadow of the Sea" Update
This major update introduces a new shadow puppet type: the Shadow Sailor, improved control over shadow puppets with the new minion menu, and a complete rework of the Codex Umbra's magic attack against shadow creatures. It also implements a number of significant minor features and changes, bug fixes, and new configuration options.

Shadow Sailor

The Shadow Sailor is Maxwell's right hand at sea. While not much use on land, on a boat Maxwell can command them to row towards a specified location, raise/lower sails and anchors, operate a fire pump, and even repair leaks without a patch. While sea fishing, Maxwell can attach a Codex to his fishing pole and it will serve as a float with very high accuracy but mediocre range. While attached as a lure, Maxwell is able to command his Shadow Sailors to row- even while fishing.

Minion Menu
The standard "recall" command when right-clicking the Codex Umbra has been replaced with a tool for managing shadow puppets called the "minion menu" (can also be opened by pressing Z). This menu shows the total number of shadow puppets that you have out of the max, the number of each type of shadow puppet, and has a number of commands that can be used:
  • Command Wait commands all shadow puppets to wait, the same as right-clicking on them.
  • Recall teleports all shadow puppets to you and makes them follow you, same as the old recall action.
  • Imprison temporarily unsummons all shadow puppets until you release them again. Imprisoned shadow puppets still count towards your total number and will die with Maxwell, this is mainly a utility to get unused shadow puppets out of the way while not being used and make shadow puppets management a bit easier.
  • Release resummons all currently imprisoned shadow puppets.
Selecting a shadow puppet type on the minion menu will change the above commands to only apply to the currently selected type (e.g., imprison all of your Shadow Loggers when you're not going to be chopping trees for a while, or recall all of your Shadow Duelists to you during a fight). Selecting a type will also highlight all shadow puppets of that type. Finally, crafting shadow puppets no longer requires the Codex Umbra to be on the ground. Instead, they are now conjured directly from the minion menu by selecting a puppet type.

Shadow Tag
The Codex Umbra spell attack has been reworked to make fighting shadow creatures a bit more engaging. It can only be used to attack shadow and nightmare creatures now, and instead of dealing damage directly, the initial attack costs 5 sanity and spawns three shadow orbs around the immediate area- Maxwell must touch each of these shadow orbs to launch them at the target.

Terrorbeaks will split into three smaller Terrorbeaks after the initial cast, each shadow orb killing off one of these fragments. Crawling Horrors instead grow faster and larger for each shadow orb absorbed, with the third causing them to rupture. If the shadow orbs are not collected in time (or the Codex is used to attack a different shadow creature) the remaining orbs will fade away and the previously targeted shadow creature will return to normal. Killing shadow creatures this way has a higher chance of dropping additional nightmare fuel than via normal methods.

New Features
  • Added the ability to reposition shadow puppets by holding ALT and clicking somewhere on the ground nearby. Short range, mainly used to get them out of the way as a quality of life feature.
  • Clicking on a Shadow Servant to open its container will cause it to run towards Maxwell if it is too far away or standing over water.
  • Commanding puppets to attack will now show a visual indicator like other commandable objects and a marker underneath the target. Both of these are only visible to the Maxwell player that commanded the attack.
  • Command attack and cancel attack are now easier to use on moving targets and will register when the mouse is within 2 units of an enemy.
  • The sanity cost of command chop now scales with the size of the tree.
  • Shadow puppets that are currently working will not teleport with Maxwell through wormholes.

Miscellaneous Changes
  • Unequipping the Codex Umbra will no longer cancel all pending shadow puppet commands as long as the player has one in their inventory or in an equipped fishing rod.
  • Removed Codex Umbra durability. There is no need to refuel it now, but shadow puppets also no longer drop nightmare fuel on death (only the other items used to conjure them).
  • Commands will no longer timeout. Instead, losing your last minion of a specific type (or commanding it to wait) will cancel all pending tasks for that minion type.
  • Commanded targets are now automatically deselected if they catch on fire or start smoldering.
  • Improved combat AI for Shadow Duelists and Shadow Guardians. Duelists will now only kite if they are being targeted or if they are one hit away from death. Guardians will no longer kite at all, preferring instead to stay in front and tank enemy hits. They will run away from the enemy if they are one hit from death and maintain their distance until their health regenerates.
  • The default sanity drain to command duelists and guardians has been increased to account for their improved combat effectiveness and the amount of time that they are usually in combat. This is only the default, and it can still otherwise be configured freely in the mod settings.
  • Removed Maxwell's penalty to hammering.
  • Targets that Maxwell targets with his commands now have better fx when selected.
  • Increased distance before shadow puppets will start following Maxwell.
  • Shadow puppets that are waiting will no longer be left behind when migrating between caves. This was made unnecessary with the addition of the imprison command.

New Configuration Options
  • Added client side configuration option to change the shadow puppet's voice sound effect or disable it completely.
  • Added server configuration option for Maxwell's maximum sanity.
  • Added server configuration option for the sanity crafting cost of shadow puppets.

Bug Fixes
  • Fixed bug preventing Shadow Servants from picking up items in water.
  • Fixed bug allowing Shadow Servants to be commanded to pickup items like backpacks that can't be put in the inventory.
  • Created entirely new shadow puppet prefab to prevent crashes with other mods that overwrite the normal shadow puppets. This may cause some features of those mods to be overwritten as well.
  • Fixed a bug causing the new animations from the Wickerbottom Rework to not show correctly.
  • Refactored most of the codebase to improve organization and performance.

Update: 29 May, 2022 @ 9:44am

Version 1.3: "Dark Defender" Update
This update replaces the Shadow Sentry with the more unique and useful Shadow Guardian. It also implements a number of changes to balance Maxwell's ability to farm nightmare fuel and bounce back from low sanity, along with some other bug fixes and quality of life improvements.

Shadow Guardian

The Shadow Guardian is the replacement for the under-performing Shadow Sentry. For the most part the Shadow Guardian behaves and controls similarly to the Shadow Duelist, but it is much more defense-oriented. It has significantly more health and it is able to taunt its target, forcing them to attack it for a few seconds. Shadow Guardians are also much less inclined to kite when attacking if the enemy is targeting them, unless they're at risk of dying. Shadow Guardians are great at keeping both Maxwell and his other puppets alive. They cost less sanity than Shadow Sentries did, but they also require a football helmet.

Refreshing Darkness
Maxwell has received a number adjustments to balance his ability to farm nightmare fuel, bounce back from low sanity, and improve his combat:
  • Shadow creatures that are attacked at all by the Codex Umbra will not restore any sanity when killed, even if by another player.
  • To make up for this, Maxwell can now consume nightmare fuel to restore a bit of his sanity. The default amount restored is 10 sanity, but this can be configured or turned off completely in the mod settings.

  • Attacking with the Codex Umbra no longer locks the player into the attack animation, and it can be canceled at any time by moving. The cooldown on the Codex Umbra will only trigger if the attack is finished.

General Improvements and Bug Fixes
  • A configuration option has been added to prevent puppet insta-kills from multi-damage sources such as groundpounds and simultaneous explosions. It works by granting them a brief immunity for about about 300 milliseconds after taking damage.
  • Shadow Puppet combat AI has been further improved.
  • Improved the FX on the Codex Umbra attack, giving it more oomph.
  • Shadow Servants will now drop the correct crafting materials on death, instead of a backpack.
  • Fixed bug causing the game to crash if a Shadow Servant was killed while its container was open.
  • Fixed bug causing Shadow Duelists not to engage Maxwell's current command attack target after being commanded to follow.
  • Fixed multiple minor visual bugs caused by lag compensation being enabled.
