When he turned eighteen, he signed up for the marine corps. With many successful operations under his belt, he was promoted to sergeant in the Hazardous Environment Combat Unit, Special Forces.

After being deployed at Black Mesa, a mysterious transmission points them to a wrong place, causing them to get stuck in the facility. After such, he meets with his rival enemy, Gordon Freeman, who killed his only family that he had left, his brothers in-arms. The encounter left him hospitalized with shotgun and crowbar wounds. The only words said by Mitchell to Gordon was: Who ever it takes, whatever it takes, however long it takes, before I die, I will kill you.

Mitchell opened his eyes in a hospital with a man with a briefcase standing over him. He was offered a chance for redemption and to fulfill his wishes of revenge, providing him authority, power, and time. The only payment asked is to kill Doctor Freeman when the time comes. After accepting, Mitchell makes contact with some remnants of the National Guard who have formulated an escape plan around a loophole of the alien-invaders. Along the way, Mitchell meets with a secretive Black Ops sniper, then accepts his offer to partner up to survive together. After having a several hour long adventure, Mitchell ran away with few handful of men with a ship.

Three years later, Mitchell and his men plan to attack a combine weapon factory they located in Alaska. They only discovered after attacking it that it was actually a synth factory fueled by slave child labor. This is the turning point for Mitchell's life, he became the villain. After he burnt the factory down, he took the kids with him and raised them as soldiers.

Seventeen years later, a crowbar appears, signalling to Mitchell the time has come. By this time, Mitchell is an old man full with regrets. He hates himself and what he does, but still can't care about anyone more than himself, locked into his selfish and destructive ways. G-man forces him to partake a mission with the objective of Killing Gordon Freeman. Mitchell goes to City 17 with his men, then after getting caught by Combine, he meets with his old friend from Alaska. It's Boris, the old administrator of the factory, who has become Dr. Breen's right hand man. With his connections, he reaches the Combine and surrenders his army to hands of the Combine overlords.

After a hell of a ride, Mitchell lost most of his man, Freeman slipped from his fingers, and he is in prison for a week. When he thought everything going back to normal, he faced the betrayal of Adam, who was working with G-Man the entire time. He learns the heavy lesson that all in life was not what it seemed.
