I instinctively keep a portal in the funel.
after your comments, I looked at the screenshot & had that light bulb moment.
how could I be that stupid. (did I type that ?)
it just never occured to me to remove the portal from the funel.
it's like leaving a cube behind.

As for the 1st part of the puzzle, I am not sure if you actually got what I intended or not. So here is my clue for it: If do the puzzle forwards does not help, then maybe doing it backwards will help.
If that does not help, the big spoiler is run backwards .
