hm... been lookin around for some kind of AEK or AN variant rifle, and I'm reluctant to pick out an old mod with little in the way of uniquity or advanced features, and I worry about sounds and reload anims... but I suppose I'll give it a try.

the silenced AEK's must be in the stealth category in order to work in spec ops. they don't work in spec ops.

You need to activate Beta Branch. To do this, right click on Ravenfield. Click "Properties" on the dropdown box that pops up. After that, click on the "Betas" tab. Then click the first dropdown box, and click "Use Beta" or something like that.
