When the sword comes out of the cane, it doesn't work and gets script errors. Can you fix it?

what would be really cool is if the R key sheathed the sword and kept it in a cane holster.

Is there some way to make it as you switch between both of them? And not get two slots. I know someone has done this but I don't know how.
