The students gather, he speaks to us all, but before getting to the part where he should demonstrate the ward he gets stuck in a dialogue loop along the lines of "due to the unfortunate incident we'll just move on" with my only response option being "weren't we meant to learn some spells" or something similar.
You say the Sons shouldn't attack NPCs, I'm guessing this doesn't apply to those in the college, but can you make them essential in that case? I feel like I'm trading out the orginal mage content for yours and fingers crossed that may be worth it in future, but it isn't yet!

@ Dr. Rob Compatible with all DLC since it's all from the Vanilla Game. Compatible also with Simple Vanilla gam w/o any DLC ;P
I like the conflict side of it - that is a good touch and adds to the game.
