Very beautifull, funny and clever mechanism to enter letters ! Thumbs up !
Rex Beans 8 Aug, 2018 @ 4:15pm
Not musically literate myself, but it was creative use of level mechanics.
CosmicD  [author] 24 May, 2016 @ 2:47am
people even solve this by trial and error, or because they "see what I did there", and know a bit about music, or just copy the solution :) I guess after a few years this isn't a surprise :) This was a very atypical puzzle.
SilverChain 24 May, 2016 @ 2:24am
from where do you have the solution for the letters?
Seamus Mcgee 10 Apr, 2016 @ 12:14pm
heres the solution aecdbcag
CosmicD  [author] 5 Dec, 2015 @ 12:33am
that's why I also placed the note letters there :)
dven1 4 Dec, 2015 @ 6:32pm
True, but you don't need to try all possible combinations, just keep track of the successes and add to the sequence each time.
CosmicD  [author] 4 Dec, 2015 @ 6:38am
yeah, if you're non musical you start to use logic, and then it becomes a logical puzzle :)
dven1 4 Dec, 2015 @ 6:18am
If you keep track of your correct guesses it doesn't take too long to suss it out. I'm not musical at all, so it was just guess-work for me. Very nice visuals and mechanicals, though, I do know enough to appreciate those.
little_tornado 12 Aug, 2015 @ 7:03am
Hey thats actually pretty darn good.
CosmicD  [author] 12 Aug, 2015 @ 6:08am
i did an attempt to a 1:1 remix of it myself,

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UmurUTIKQbU

I'm about to uploade a 1:1 recreation of the fringe opening theme today too, I love doing these things, so that's where I get the inspiration to do musical stuff in portal puzzles.
little_tornado 12 Aug, 2015 @ 4:48am
BTW:Thiswas only clear to me after the puzzle but the specific track is reconstructing more science. if the track is playing too fast for you to hear the notes try harry callighans remix of it. incidentaly its not the signature song of the game but it is the trailer music. Great test.
PS:if you cant find the remix feel free to message me. ill try and remeber where i found my copy.
CosmicD  [author] 22 Aug, 2014 @ 2:58pm
wow, didn't I create a routine for this, damn.. well I guess I didn't think it was possible. When I install portal 2 again, I should do a final bug fix run :P
0bsidianFire 22 Aug, 2014 @ 2:21pm
This was great (and 10+ years of playing music finally come in handy in a video game). The only glitch I found was that I managed to press the buttons too fast and the core dropped out of the funnel and into the water and didn't respawn.
Petutski 28 May, 2014 @ 10:36am
Beautiful chamber. The puzzle a bit inane. Used trial and error with lots of F6 F7 to solve in a tedious way.
Twenty Four 8 Dec, 2013 @ 1:44pm
Got to give you an A for originality. way to tedious tho.
Still gets a thumbs up.
The Sojourner 17 Sep, 2013 @ 2:59pm
I'm sure the Aperture Science Psychoacoustics Laboratories are proud of you.
The Sojourner 17 Sep, 2013 @ 2:58pm
OK, for anyone who is stuck on the combination: Think back to the theme song of the game you're playing! It's just in a different key.
Meatgolem 3 Aug, 2013 @ 4:46pm
WTF end was scary
dcook 28 Mar, 2013 @ 12:06am
Ok, I'm pretty musical, but I have no idea what the melody is from...
CosmicD  [author] 24 Mar, 2013 @ 3:18am
well there were a few hints, and for non musicians the count down scripts and letters being the only tangible one
NiclO (- - ) 24 Mar, 2013 @ 2:45am
Amazing and annoying :P The mechanic is beautiful, amazeballs and awesomesause! But finding the combination was a bit frustrating :P
mikemoody 23 Mar, 2013 @ 10:58pm
Well I'm glad there was a #7, it was Great. I had a blast playing it and thought the map was very well made. Keep up the good work, I'm going to play Dead before Dawn DC.
CosmicD  [author] 23 Feb, 2013 @ 2:19pm
Thank you for all the positive comments. It was quite unexpected. Because I was thinking that the experiment was too far fetched. Some of you try to find it by pure trial and error (i should be able to make a steam achievement for that :P , Others are helped with the hints.

After I'm done on the next version of Dead Before Dawn DC for the workshop, I'm returning here to finish up the last map of this campaign!
Tartiflette3000 23 Feb, 2013 @ 2:20am
That's one of my favorite map !! I really loved the concept that was really good !!!!!!!!!! I play the drums so it had not helped me but that was just amazing ! Thank you so much ^^
PS : your walls are beatiful ;)
Enhe 20 Feb, 2013 @ 8:52pm
Most difficult test chamber EVER!! Still love it!

Sisko-K ™ [IR-FR] 1 Feb, 2013 @ 5:15am
Very nice , good job , AGAIN !
Lolsama 31 Jan, 2013 @ 6:26am
so ya liked it but what is the song or letter combonatin from?
not musical at all found the correct digits out by trail and error

but ya where i think a lot about is what is it?

mechanics where very nice
Belthazar 27 Jan, 2013 @ 4:25am
I do know music, so I'm not sure my luck in guessing proved anything much. =) Just don't recognise the song (it's in A-minor, yes?) and wasn't spotting any visual clues. Didn't really listen to what GLaDOS said when the level started. =P
CosmicD  [author] 27 Jan, 2013 @ 1:00am
there are people who do it that way yes. It's just an experiment of mine. People who think of themself that they arn't musical, could find out clues in the level and I turn the puzzle in a bit of an ARG where you can investigate the correlations if you need explanations. The counter above you helps in pointing out the amount of notes you have to solve (if you don't have an idea about the song). There's plenty cues.

The notes are labeled exactly like in the music world. (begining pianists would place stickers like this on their keyboard).

I think you have just prooved Bobby McFerrin's theory that every person even if they don't know a rat's....... about music, they have a semi concious gut feeling of what to expect in a certain situation if you take "easy melodies" whereas we're here in the portal 2 universe.

Please continue testing...
Belthazar 26 Jan, 2013 @ 8:26pm
The piano was a really nice idea. Just... what song are we supposed to be playing? Are there any hints in the level? Once I worked out the first note from trial-and-error, I managed to completely fluke-guess the next five, purely on the fact that it sounded nice, which let me make educated guesses to narrow down the last two. However, if that hadn't worked, were you expecting me to try all 1.6 million combinations one-by-one?
CosmicD  [author] 24 Jan, 2013 @ 1:52am
updated the map again. Now, the new puzzle counter shows you a visual confirmation of the errors you make before resetting it's falue.
Anachronistic ALLOS 21 Jan, 2013 @ 5:51pm
This is awesome. Most awesome thing I've seen. There NEEDS to be more musical tests like this on the workshop!
CDR F. Cadigan 21 Jan, 2013 @ 8:26am
its A E C D B C A R G
CDR F. Cadigan 21 Jan, 2013 @ 8:25am
i did it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nobody No-One 21 Jan, 2013 @ 7:07am
Nice.
CosmicD  [author] 21 Jan, 2013 @ 5:30am
I have updated the map with some tech to prevent glitching the funnel placement out before the music puzzle is support to start, also I added a display that will show the number of notes left to solve (and it will reset itself to make it even more visible that you have to start over) I hope this helps making the nature of the puzzle a bit less cryptic
Sylvia Moonbeam 20 Jan, 2013 @ 9:42pm
gotten down to AECDBC... but I've given up for now... maybe I'll try again later when I have more patience
CosmicD  [author] 20 Jan, 2013 @ 11:47am
LOL, good that you like it . My concern is how people who don't conciously hear rythm or tones are going to solve this puzzle though. There's the "reconstructing science" refference, and the music IS played in the (not so) secret room. Rattman has provided some hints, but this is more like an ARG puzzle than anything else. I might add some more hints later like a countdown of button presses that have to be done.
Orahi 20 Jan, 2013 @ 11:24am
9999/10. The best musical challenge I played. ^w^
