"Vinland Saga" from the historic battles is one of my favorite campaign mission ever! It was such a wonderful mission with fantastical elements. So beautifully recreated in AOE 2.
The sagas report that a considerable number of Vikings were in parties that visited Vinland - which is essentially northern Newfoundland - modern Canada - centuries before Europeans arrived in the new world.
And i was so happy to see a custom campaign based on the same setting, so beautifully made by Filthydelphia. This was fun due to some unique side quests - like finding clues about ancient human activity in Greenland or finding a path to the new world.
The campaign made you work with minuscule amount of resources and recreated the feeling of ever present danger. It made you feel like a small explorer in a giant cold and harsh world, which is how the vikings must have felt when they visited the new world.
I loved it! Hats off to the creator Filthydelphia!

Interesting map, but I was too easy in standard (bring the hero, kill all the monks and Irish warriors, gather wood in the faroese and done!). Furthermore, several other maps portray the vinland saga and the Viking discovery of Greenland and North America. Since you're following the Vikings series, why not instead focus on Floki escaping Kattegat (eg gather enough people to sail with) and then the colony in Iceland is divided, people get murdered and Vikings fight each other. That would be more interesting imho. ;)

Fun map to explore, but once you make it to Vinland the challenge disappears (On Moderate, at least). It takes a bit of back and forth to get a foothold on Labrador, but once you can get a Barracks there, Skraelings are done for. It's not really necessary for the scenario to beat them, but I did anyway.

2 boats of Nordic axes are enough to get a foothold on Iceland- and then it's same strategy-get a barracks + an archery range on the shore and pump out more m@a until enemies crushed.

Irish on Iceland... okay?!?

As a fan of your work, i will be straight with my feedback.

There is obviously a lot of quality in the technical side of te campaign, but There were issues for me which prevented me from finishing the map.

The campaign has other norms than the usual campaign, which add to the ''realism'' (low pop space, limited resources etc) but instead of adding a challenge they just add to the grind. Grind for resources, grind to kill the enemies. It's not challenging at all, it just takes a lot of time without receiving satisfaction. There is no reward for having all these disabilities rather than the mission being time consuming without a test of skill.

It was too easy, i landed the viking hero on the right side of island and solo picked off all the woad raiders and monks couldn't do anything. Then i just murder the irish with the viking hero and it ended after i built the colony. I wish you kept going but it was really going to be a grind with 20 population and limited resources.
PotatoSalad 31 Jul, 2018 @ 1:51pm
Yeah, on standard difficulty I didn't ever have to find greenland to beat the irish
Pierre 31 Jul, 2018 @ 8:34am
OK! I tried again: Iceland was again too easy to settle, but it was fun. Then I sail to Greenland and America, this time: the bears in Greenland! aaaah! they are horrible! :-þ
I quick abandonned my colony in Greenland and move to Helluland, then Vinland (I kept Markland for later). I appreciate more this time the scenario, but I still am a little bit disappointed as there are no objectives for settling Greenland or America. And the population limit of 20 is quite… quite a punishment: maybe it could be raised to 30, 40 or 50 when settling other lands?
Pierre 22 Jul, 2018 @ 11:42am
So, why not having for objectives to settle Iceland, then to discover and settle Greenland, then to bring back wood from Markland to build a larger colony in Iceland?

 Other remarks:
   – why is there only Ingólfr as hero? why not Erik the Red? Leif? (but maybe they appear if the player sails to Greenland; I should give another try to this scenario)
   – Icelanders used to collect wood on coastal shipwreck, maybe you can add some triggers with that;
   – there were horses in Iceland, brought by the settlers, so why the stables are not available? maybe for balancing?
I may seem very negative, but I think that this scenario could be really great with some adjustments; and next to your other scenarios (and not only Ragnar’s raid or Ironside), this one seems… unfinished, like a sketch. But I must say that the map is a great work!
(Sorry if my english is hard to understand, I am not a native speaker.)

Hi! I very much liked Ragnar’s Raids and Ironside, but I honestly must say that I was quite disappointed by this scenario.
I played it in standard difficulty and it was very easy to devastate Iceland with Ingólfr Arnarson and then bring builders to settle the island, without having to seek for wood in Greenland nor Markland. OK, I will be said that it was in standard difficulty, but… you say that the player has to explore Greenland and Vinland to build the settlement and… it though could be done. Maybe you should remove more wood or change the objectives; let me explain my remark: Iceland was already well settled when some Icelanders discovered Greenland and moved there and Greenland too was settled when some Greenlanders may have discovered Helluland, Markland and Vinland.
(I have to cut there to respect a limit of 1 000 characters. I go on after.)

Just finished this scenario. I wish I had known that destroying the huts stopped Skraelings spawning and I wish I had known that there is the much smaller island of Vinland to the South ripe for the picking instead of clearing all of Markland of Skraelings only to find them multiplying in the masses soon after! Would have been cool if there had been any easter eggs such as lost berserks hidden in the centre of Greenland, as it would give you an incentive to actually fight the bears without just walling them out. Still, great scenario, really enjoyed it!
Filthydelphia  [author] 2 Jun, 2018 @ 11:29am
Chud, yes destroying the huts will stop the spawns, but keep in mind that the Vikings did not defeat the Skraelings, so defeating them is something very difficult to do!

Tasteful, to disable the Viking music:

1. Select Steam Workshop from the game's main menu
2. Locate the Installed Mod with the name Viking Music
3. Select the mod and select the Disable button on the top right side of the screen
4. Original music will now be restored
5. Alternatively, deleting the Viking Music folder entirely or unsubscribing will restore the original music
Chuddy 2 Jun, 2018 @ 10:03am
Can I stop the Skraelings on Markland from multiplying by destroying their huts?
compostmodern 29 May, 2018 @ 9:49am
Can you put out a version of this without the need for viking music?

I have been working my way through Hit&Run for hours, I have enough wood only through bug-using, so by cutting the way off the eagles with palisades, chopping wood quickly and sailing away as soon as the palisade breaks again.

I wonder if that's the point. K.a., I haven't seen any other way, it's very opaque for me. Is it me? Probably...

But it would be good if the clues were a little more detailed. I'm going back to my Save-Load-Festival :-)

But +1, for the hard work

Very nice scenario! Accidentally built a house where the Norse warriors spawn so didn't manage to use these but still managed to get through. The atmosphere of the scenario is great too!

UPDATED VERSION RELEASED:
- Player will now receive free economic technologies by constructing buildings in Greenland, Helluland, and the Americas. These technologies speed up the pace of the scenario.
- Disabled unnecessary cavalry armor technologies as the Stables is disabled in the scenario.

Juvenal, great point! I had not considered that I had a lot of trees on the Faroes and that players could use that wood to build rather than go to the Americas. Good thinking! I might have to update it later with less trees there!
Juvenal 12 Apr, 2018 @ 6:28am
I will replay the scenario with the new updates. So much I can tell before: conquering Iceland in the old version was not hard at all. i had the hero unit and 13 of the northern soldiers units, 3 transports and 3 villagers (one on Greenland taking the rest of gold and stone after i took all coast fish and trees, one on the faroer to take the wood there, since there is a lot and one on the transport ships).

UPDATED VERSION RELEASED:
Made several changes to make it more difficult to complete all objectives before reaching the Americas:
- Reduced the number of trees on Iceland
- Irish receive more resources on all difficulties
- Irish receive murder holes on Moderate/Hard difficulty
- Irish will research man-at-arms
Filthydelphia  [author] 9 Apr, 2018 @ 6:19am
Hi Juvenal, thanks for the update. Not sure why the crashes are happening. I'll have to look deeper. Regarding your points: it is intended that you take no damage travelling from Greenland to Helluland. This is the route Leif Ericson is believed to have taken and is shown on the scenario instructions screen in-game. This is a much safer trip than going straight across from Greenland to America, for example. And correct, there are no objectives in America. My thinking in designing the scenario was to keep it as open-ended as possible and let the Player decide what they wanted to do and how much they wanted to conquer (the Vikings historically did not wipe out the Skraelings, after all). Surprisingly, you managed to defeat the Irish and settle Iceland without the help of the American wood, which I imagined was necessary. I may have to update the scenario to make settling Iceland a bit harder without reaching the Americas. Thanks again.
Juvenal 8 Apr, 2018 @ 10:11am
@Filthydelphia: i don't know why this happened. i had a TC and a LC on iceland already and built the required buildings, but no LC in america and no trees left in greenland. therefore i got under 100 wood but also had access to the tress on iceland already.

- what occured to me as well: there was always a green unit bugged in the cliffs close to the southeastern tower/monastery on iceland, which i could only take out with an archer.
- my transportships didn't lose hp on the small trip between greenland and helluland.
- i didn't go to helluland or america, before i conquered and settled iceland, because i thought there would be another victory condition related with america (like destroy all the towers of yellow).
Filthydelphia  [author] 3 Apr, 2018 @ 4:15pm
Juvenal, thanks for bringing this to my attention. You are triggered to receive the wood if you don't have enough to build a lumber camp, don't have any lumber camps in America, and you have chopped all the trees in southern Greenland (it's just a way for players to not get stuck for lack of wood). Can you think of anything you might have done immediately after receiving the wood that could have caused problems?
Filthydelphia  [author] 3 Apr, 2018 @ 4:11pm
Hoffman, really cool! Thanks for doing this. I'm sure many players would love to play with your modified transports. I'm away from home this week, but I can't wait to check it out.
hoffmann.sama.tobin 3 Apr, 2018 @ 3:23pm
I made a mod that replaces the transport ship's graphics with the Viking Longboat graphics for more immersion.

Thanks you for creating such a fun scenario, I hope this adds more to the enjoyment of this great scenario.

Maybe i have to reinstall, because my game crashed twice short after i got the 125 washed up lumber during my build-up phase on iceland. Could be a bug as well?
