You might want to check out GIMP's scripts if you haven't. It has a lot of easy texturing tools that make land look like various forms of map texture, such as topographic landscapes and stuff, instead of just photos of rocks or what have you. I find it fun to work with and more realistic, you can make any kind of texture you want quite easily
