Theres an image in there that goes into detail about colour mapping
I got a brand new race registering but other than that, I'm completely clueless with actually modifying what changes what color.
Smaller tails and spikey hair would easily make this look like a hedgie.

I am not sure what you are asking.
You only need to extract zipped mods from non steam sources. You can use both mods on the workshop and ones that aren't, together.
This program https://www.7-zip.org/ allows you to extract 7zip files.
Extract the file in your mods folder.
I would love to be proven wrong :P.
