for my mods i only need a txt editor like notepad or the much better notepad++

for more complex mods you will need Photoshop or gimp for textures and 3dstudio max or blender for 3d modeling. if you want to create maps the l4d2 authoring tools available under the tools section in your steam library.how i started was i looked at other peoples mods to learn how they worked, but there are plenty of tutorials online like this one
