To be fair I'm a bit of a coward.
One thing that was surprisingly effective was a single beer bottle in the entire mineshaft. I found it not far from a pit that insta-kills you if you drop down it. For some reason, that beer bottle freaked me out into thinking something was behind me. I kept looking behind myself as I tossed grenades down the cliff for the hell of it. Funny how little things like that can make such an effect.
