You never needed much maneuverability in the SR-71. It cruised at 26,000 meters at Mach 3.2 (though it could be easily pushed faster if not for inlet temperature). For some comparisons, that's less than 2 hours to fly from LA to NYC (1 hour, 54 minutes, and 56 seconds).

It means your enemy has very, very little time to launch intercept planes. It was made virtually impossible with all the careful planning that went into SR-71 routes. Not one was ever shot down, but one was eventually intercepted by the Russians and forced into Swedish airspace.

You could survey up to 160 km square of surface per hour at cruising altitude. If the worst came, you throttled up and changed course. No need for anything more fancy than that. Fuel is the only thing you worried about.

In case anyone was wondering, the highest recorded speed that an SR-71 has reached is Mach 3.3 (specifically 2,193.2 MPH or 3,529.6 KM/H, 1,905.81 knots, or 980.4 m/s) so this thing is really damn fast. I got up to 1400 m/s at about 5 km over the ocean which roughly equates to 3,131.711 MPH or 5,040 KM/H, 2,721.382 knots, or Mach 4.08.

Not sure if the real Blackbird was, but this is very good at verticals

Jesus, I got this up to 1,300 m/s at 20 km, the re-entry particles kicked in lol, wouldn't exactly make a good stealth spy plane if there's a big ass flame trail behind it

Awesome SR-71 replica! Even better with the Dark Texture Pack mod installed and all the parts converted over to the "black" variant. Answering the question someone asked several months ago, I unstoppered the tanks to fill it "all the way up", and the answer to "how fast can it go" is "A lot slower." Also, the handling when "full" sucks. There's a good reason why most of the aircraft is empty, and even with a low amount of fuel, it's got pretty good range if you fly it up where it's intended to be: i.e. 16-20km up. I was able to max it out at about 1,150m/s, which is about 150m/s faster than the real SR-71's speed record. The real thing could fly up to 26km in sustained flight, and I got it almost up there in several runs. Nice to see a replica that models real world performance of the aircraft it's intended to emulate.

i wonder how fast it can go, if all those tanks were full to the brim.
wizgiz 21 Jul, 2018 @ 11:35pm
i have built one brefore and it's faster and more stable... but this is just downright fun
