Furthermore, many things changed from one to the other; new coding scripts, new texture and material shaders, etc. So even if we did have both, we can't just compile the assets in each and be done with it. Much needs to change inside the mechanics of how each piece is added to the game. The assets need to be reworked, the textures as well, etc.

No, you already asked this question and I gave an answer.
prob with the Vanilla mod tools is they pre-date the DLCs even coming out, so it could be a bit difficult to get them to play nice when you're trying to mod something from them (should be noted the Alien Hunters armors are apparently still ridiculously resistant to attempts to directly mod them).
pick up WoTC, it's worth the cash (even for no other reason than the ridiculously awesome mods that've shown up lately), and you can still run Vanilla if you want to even having it, just like XCOM EU and EW. just make sure LW2's clicked off if you're playing WoTC and vice versa.
