MaTT absolutely loved this, spent my youth in the Bristol area during the BR Blue era
Railhead 11 Apr, 2019 @ 2:50am
One of the best Scenarios I have ever downloaded from the Workshop, I recently wrote something in the Discussions section about it. The liveries are correct, there is plenty of AI with a mix of different trains, there are static trains in the sidings ( though I have added some more), the timings are realistic, and the station stops are as they should be. There is plenty of interest in playing the Scenario with the station stops, keeping to time, the AI and static trains and having to watch for signals.
Why can't more Scenarios be like this?

Matt excellent scenario very stable. Great realism and realistic timings. PS No crahes on saving!
JLD95 8 Nov, 2013 @ 9:35am
Great scenario, thank you Matt
MaTT  [author] 11 Sep, 2013 @ 1:06am
Because the class 86 comes with mk2 coaches that have door sounds and guards buzzer and whistle, this is important when playing the scenario without using the HUD, the scenario was originally made for me and I never use the HUD. the class 86 loco itself is obviously not used ... I felt it wasnt worth converting to kuju mk2s because they look rubbish and the scenario already has the very marginal BR101 which few people own, because the scenario will only have limited appeal it wasnt worth wasting much time on conversion ... dont know why you downloaded it if you didnt have the 86 as its clearly marked in the requirement tags on the top right.
aidanhegarty 11 Sep, 2013 @ 12:03am
I subscribed to this but when trying to launch it says I need to buy a DLC Class 86. A Class 86 on Bristol - Exeter. WHY??????
sylgold 21 Jul, 2013 @ 4:57pm
Nice run. Thank you.
Leigh 19 Jul, 2013 @ 7:47am
Nice run down sarrf on a hot summers day, glad the rails didn't buckle in all that heat! =D
MaTT  [author] 30 Jun, 2013 @ 11:00pm
Unfortunately its impossible to recycle AI on a point to point double track route like B2E, I have tried many times because it would be a very efficient use of resorces ... all the AI are unique, you encounter each one only once.
ken6p 30 Jun, 2013 @ 5:17pm
nice scenario, awesome amount of passing traffic although im sure I saw several lots over and over;still did not spoil the enjoyment, well done thanks
MaTT  [author] 20 Jun, 2013 @ 1:41am
interestingly the test scenrio doesnt list the BR class 31 on the required assets only the regular one ... have you noticed that? ... right im going to get my work done sharpish so I can get home subscribe and have a looksee ... I'll get back to you later ... cheers again
richfx 20 Jun, 2013 @ 1:38am
Lol. No worries!
MaTT  [author] 20 Jun, 2013 @ 1:38am
Ok cheers ... I dont normally do FRs on here because it can be distracting, i'll make an exception for you becuase of your help and you seem like a decent sort of chap ... cheers again
richfx 20 Jun, 2013 @ 1:34am
Matt,

I'd not actually published it. I will and see what happens. I'll just have it visible to friends as it's not a scenario as such, just trying to prove your point so that this issue can be resolved.
MaTT  [author] 20 Jun, 2013 @ 1:28am
It will publish ok regardless the important indicator is the class 31 appearing twice on the list as in the screen shot above ... so if the list of DLC requirements says class 31 class 31 and BR class 31 it is not fixed ... also note if you bought your original class 31 prior to 17 Jan 2013 you wont be affected anyway as the incompatibility only affects the asset after it was returned to sale on Steam ... if they have fixed it they just need to say, however you already know my ticket is being handled by somone who doent even have a rudimentry understanding of asset compatibility ... unfortunately I'm currently working away until Tonight so I cant check until then, i'm not about to loosen my grip until I can confirm a fix ... leave the scenario up and i will snag it as soon as I get home, i can use it as evedence because it shows the BR class 31 in place to ... cheers mate
richfx 20 Jun, 2013 @ 1:15am
Matt,

Just as a little test I set up a scenario using the original class 31. I simply placed one of each of the locos provided and gave one of them a driver. I then tested to see if it would publish and it was ok. I think they may of fixed the issue.
MaTT  [author] 15 Jun, 2013 @ 12:41am
LOL so the plan is to up the frequency to 50 tph? ... I'll take a looksee at level 5 locos again ...
richfx 14 Jun, 2013 @ 3:03pm
I might (emphasis on 'might') have a play with the Cornish Scot. I love it, but I got upset by the fact that GLC now has 26 trains an hour from Euston. You can argue all you want but a book is in the post that proves me right.

Have a good weekend!

Redo my Level 5 Locos unless you're doing Mondays washing-up.
MaTT  [author] 14 Jun, 2013 @ 9:29am
Its a good idea in theory, im up for having my scenarios pimped, you use London to Favershambles a lot though which i dont have out of principle because if i really wanted to spend so much time in tunnels i would go out into my garden and dig a big hole, so i dont get a huge amount of choice over which ones I can go for, If you want to try your hand at pimping one of my scenarios I would love to see the results.

BTW That was an excellent tip on the forum about renaming the scenarey file while working in editor on L2B its cured the SBHH problem completely.
richfx 14 Jun, 2013 @ 5:01am
@Armrail Yes I agree, rigid timetable scenarios even on a line as busy as L&B can be a bit dull but they're great to use as starting template and then add in a few late runners, light engines and freights in for added interest. If I do a strict timetable scenario then I'll throw in some kind of random event. For example I did a scenario called Brighton Breeze and I've used the emergency stop trigger to simulate the unit tripping out and you end up having to take it onto shed. I so wish there we're more things like that you could do. I've worked on the railway. All kinds of crazy things happen!

Just a suggestion to you both, but it might be quite interesting if we remixed one anothers scenarios?
MaTT  [author] 13 Jun, 2013 @ 3:15pm
As I have refined my placement that recalc has become less of an issue, i remember when i first started I would change an AIs timing and everything would get scattered causing no end of knock-on errors, one of the reasons i leave my AI numbered is its a guide to sytematicly adding instructions in an order that wont interfere with already programmed AI, the problem comes when you want to make tweaks that push the AI out of the time window it has, as you say the best way to handle large amounts of AI its to keep the paths simple like a path of ants. L2B can handle multiple unrelated paths, actually its critical on that route because of the portal shortage, took me a lot of swearing to work that one out
Armorin 13 Jun, 2013 @ 2:56pm
I suppose my approach to scenario creation is very similar to Matt's. I first set up the player trains and then set up a series of AI interactions. Then I throw in the eye candy AI, and do not care if a train passed by the player at point A actually originated from point B rather than point C. I try to make the AI eye candy trains easy for the dispatcher to handle, purposefully trying to avoid complex crossing manouvres that the player train will never encounter. One trick I have recently learnt is to watch out for dispatcher 'recalcs'. If the timings in the editor keep flickering, then the dispatcher is performing a 'recalc' as the AI trains are getting in each others way. This can be useful for creating a steady stream of dense AI traffic, altering the timings to avoid a 'recalc'.
Armorin 13 Jun, 2013 @ 2:56pm
Interesting discussion going on. Using real timetables can lead to some boring scenarios, although it is nice to have a perfect clean run now and again. A semi-fictoinal timetable allows for more scope to be fun, and less risk of getting frustrated by the dispatcher not playing ball. Sometimes the crazy dispatcher decision making actually adds something special to the semi-fictional scenario!
MaTT  [author] 13 Jun, 2013 @ 2:45pm
Indeed, it is a bit sad, especially as wifey is on her way home from working away and i'm spending my time on here instead of doing the washing up which I said I would do Monday ... meh watever hehe.
richfx 13 Jun, 2013 @ 2:43pm
Sweet. Sad pair of geeks aren't we!
MaTT  [author] 13 Jun, 2013 @ 2:42pm
Woohoo ... done and purchased ... it cost less than a kidney to ... cheers
richfx 13 Jun, 2013 @ 2:31pm
Ye, me too, the railway of my youth. L2B is not so bad for doing prototypical stuff as is GWML although it's annoying that the wires are up on it. That said it's pretty easy to remove them with RW Tools. Got it off Ebay. Theres a copy of 1H86 on there now. Get it!

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/IH86-1986-SUMMER-TIMETABLE-COMPLETE-GUIDE-1986-1st-VINTAGE-RAILWAY-TITLE/360533960749?_trksid=p2045573.m2042&_trkparms=aid%3D111000%26algo%3DREC.CURRENT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D27%26meid%3D8356182364166144713%26pid%3D100033%26prg%3D1011%26rk%3D1%26sd%3D360533960749%26
MaTT  [author] 13 Jun, 2013 @ 2:15pm
I love the late blue early secorisation era, I was travelling L2B and GWML frequently throughout the 80s, I'm massivlly frustrated that there are glaring omissions to the available stock for the period if eveything was availble I would make some scenarios that were minute perfect to the timetable ... I would quite happily give up a kidney for a copy of that book, where did you find it?
richfx 13 Jun, 2013 @ 2:08pm
Lol. Ye, I get what you're saying so I tend to use it as a base and add in fillers to get it to the density I want. Your scenarios are awesome, not in any way trying to say you do it wrong just sharing tips. Speaking of 1985-86 I got hold of the 1986 Loco Hauled workings book the other day. Essential gen, if only the railways were still like that!
MaTT  [author] 13 Jun, 2013 @ 2:03pm
I started out using the timetable and naming the trains, I have my bible (The 1985-86 BR timetable on my desk) but real schedules never gave me the AI density i wanted, For me its about AI encounters, my scenarios are a series of setpiece encounters with multiple AI, the timetable doesnt give you this, its about positioning the player for the maximum possible eyecandy before driving on to the next setpiece, so yes i do use the timetable to set the player train and also to detrmine calling patterns, but by the time I have twisted it into the encounters i want the player to go though its often very distorted, truly prototypical as opposed to typical, The naming convention is secondary, Once the player has encountered the AI its off the map by the shortest possible route, if I use real headcodes people will expect the train to carry on following its path and maybe question why that intercity train dived off down some overgrown branch line heading for the nearest portal,
richfx 13 Jun, 2013 @ 1:29pm
I noticed that you tend to just use service 1, 2, 3 etc, etc. I can't emphasise enough how useful following real timetables are. Not only are you then being prototypical it saves you doing a lot of thinking as the timetable planners at Network Rail have done the pathing for you which by and large the sim can handle. Even if I'm doing something historic I'll use the current timetable as a base and then tweak accordingly to fit. As an example a pre-Thameslink London and Brighton scenario those services just become London Bridge to Brighton services instead. Another benefit is headcodes. Having 1U15 0630 Gatwick to London Victoria is a lot easier to debug than ServiceXX. Using proper headcodes tells you straight away what the service is and where it's come from and going to. Don't know if you're aware of it but the Realtimetrains website is an absolute godsend and it even has freight timings in it now.
MaTT  [author] 13 Jun, 2013 @ 1:17pm
20 hours is the average for me, although a good deal of it is driving the scenario repeatedly and tweaking AI timings, as I have got better i have learned to avoid the bugs on each route at the placement stage so I dont have to spend so much time troubleshooting, one scenario took me three days to fix,
richfx 13 Jun, 2013 @ 1:12pm
No worries. It's not easy doing these things a lot of trial and error as you know. Still, it's nothing compared to trying to build a prototypical route. It takes about 3 days just to get everything set up!
MaTT  [author] 13 Jun, 2013 @ 1:08pm
Bugger, I just tested it, because it works on my scenarios I never thought to check other peoples, I cant even export them with utilities ... thanks for the heads up.
richfx 13 Jun, 2013 @ 12:58pm
Matt,

Sadly you can't edit stuff in RW Tools if you can't play it in the first place. It's only once you've played it does it become available in your scenario list and therefore editable.
MaTT  [author] 13 Jun, 2013 @ 12:49pm
@Remix I have already taken out the IHH class 50s, 117s, 45s and class 20s just to get it into the workshop any more and the scenario wont be immersive or have the feel of the route during the era, you can swap out stuff you dont have easily with RWtools ... I make scenarios for myself and share a few of them as a secondary consideration, there is a lot of time invested in them so im not massively inclined to make something I wont be interested in playing myself ... I have started making the occasional stripped down scenario specificly for workshop (LCD series) I may make one for B2E in future but its not high on my list of priorities because the route is not really popular enough.
Electric Sheep 13 Jun, 2013 @ 12:32pm
Any chance of making a scenario likes this but with less DLC?
