Sorry you are having problems. Playing random maps is a feature of this mod so it should work.
Probably it need parts of the Alexander scenario:

Can you try to install this scenario and try a custom map with the Alexander mod activated again and let me know if it works?

It's just a huge map atm with 48 factions. To be able to play you need to download the Great Battles Scenario. (see mod description).

It's a very early version, the relations and objectives are not properly setup yet. I'm working on it.

Is this a collection of battles or an actual campaign?
