A cap is a type of hat.
A hat isn't necessarily a cap.
A hat does not require a brim to be a hat.

I'm only going to add the cap because Rochelle talks about Ellis' shirt "BullShifters". It makes more sense, and although Ellis is a mechanic, and he says he had a garage, he never tells the name of it or even give it a small glimpse of what it wold be called or what logo wold have. So, his cap doesn't really have any meaning other than he's a generic mechanic from the Cajun.

And yes, that's a cap, not a hat. A hat is what the formula 1, NASCAR or anything involving racing teams, racecar drivers use, OR a fedora or anything of sort. A cap is usually more wide, only used for either promotion of a buissiness OR casual use.

So let's sum it up:
Hat - Use to distinguish status of said person (like old people - fedoras; beret for either artistic people, farmers or classic French steriotype) OR for professional use (as in buissinesses or teams)
Cap - More towards the civilian lifestyle, activists, or to show admiration to teams.

Pretty cool if you ask me!
