I think this approach is better and gives more freedom.
Now you can constantly add research slots :)
If you want to activate the event after the game has started or even activate the event multiple times, you'd need to write event tech_add.1 in the console.
it was possible to play it in the 1.7 version of the game but i changed it so there is no warning before you start the game.
