Don't want to be the party pooper but the blue laser is the more scientifically accurate and sensible choice - red lasers aren't as powerful and YES it is purely down to colour in some ways.

Honestly, I think it looks better than blue. Technically a blue laser would be able to do more destruction, sure, but this one makes me not want to step into the beam even more .
