@John41 Good news. I managed to find the gm_New_Republic map, and I'm testing it out in GMod. Everything looks and works great! The one thing that I noticed about it though is that there seems to be a texture error for the skybox. Mainly just the skybox walls. The top looks just fine. I'm not sure what the issue could be, so I was wondering if you might know? I can post a screenshot if it would help

That would be great. I hope that happens soon, as I would really like to test that map out. I never got a chance to try it myself back when it was up, since I didn't get involved in GMod until 2018, which was well after GMod 13 released

That's the one. I expect the assets are gone but I might still have a PC with the map saved on it. They're in storage right now, but should I ever come across the map file, I'll upload it.

I found an archived snapshot of it on the Wayback Machine recently, but it was from when it was available on the now defunct garrysmods.org website. And in addition to what you described, it was also loosely based off of Angel Island from Sonic, as it had an altar for the Master Emerald.

Yeah, that was me, assuming were talking about the level that had the Parthenon, Mayan pyramid and Angel island with a lounge built into the side.
Hopefully that still exists somewhere out there in the wilds, as I don't know that I still have a copy, (and I doubt I still have any of the assets either).

I don't even know if I still have any of the assets I was using; It was like 10 years ago, (as depressing as that sounds). Honestly I had put all my source projects on the back burner waiting for Valve to release HL3 and Source 2. Then Valve stopped making games. I guess I did too. Maybe someday we'll both get back into it.

The biggest problem doing it this way: Hammer only really lets you build things on a grid. Squares are easy to do. It's no coincidence that this map is the most square of the hub maps in SA, (even more so than Station Square). The bumpy terrain took ages to get right since I had to manually move each of the vertices to the right place and displacement maps only come in fixed shapes and sized, so trying to get them to cover oddly shaped terrain and get them textured properly is a nightmare.

I had most of the past emerald shrine and the bridge leading to it built, but the displacements for the rest of that land just proved too much. Same thing with the Mystic Ruins station. I had the platform, train tracks and most of Tail's workshop all built, but the terrain was just agonizing. I had the part of Station Square built but I was pretty burnt out by then.

It's impossible to directly port maps from Sonic Adventure to Source. SA uses models for everything and source uses that strange brush system from HL1.

What I did to create this level was convert the entire SA level into a model that I could see in the Source Hammer editor, scaled it to roughly the right size, (I was using GMOD sonic player models as reference), and painstakingly built brushes around each part of the model. Then I converted all the SA textures into something Hammer could use and painted all the surfaces. I used displacement maps on the oddly shaped land masses and a skybox with the model of the sky from the game. Anything I couldn't replicate with brushes, (the snake head door, the trees, etc), imported directly as a static prop model.

Eitherway really appreciate the time and effort you and your friends went to in importing Sonic content to GMod. It's great when Sonic gets some tribute in other game series and it's always fun to casually explore maps in GMod.

I'm pretty sure merging the the temple and the emerald altar was the original plan. If I remember right, the biggest problem was the size of the altar map. While the playable area was pretty tiny in SA, there seemed to be a pretty huge area around the river and hills. If I was going to preserve the area, as well as hide the temple and altar from each other's view, it would have meant spacing them pretty far apart. The scaled model of the altar map took up almost half of the build-able space, so I didn't really see a way to put them together.

The other issue is I was getting burnt out trying to get all those displacements to cover the hills and mountains placed right. Even the temple map that was mostly square had a large number of them, probably took me longer to do those than the rest of the map. I had the altar structure and bridge mostly done, but I think I was discouraged by the displacements. Did work a bit on station square for a bit, but never got anything playable.
