I'd also say it's the publisher's issue. You could try a refund through steam, the game is borked with no update in sight for you.

Something could've gone funky though, if you want to upload your save file somewhere?
I've tried all 4 combinations of the switches, reloading the saves each time, and I've reloaded the game a couple of times too. An empty hole is a lot better than the lag but it'd be cool to see some indication if possible.
I took a screenshot but there's nothing much to show besides an empty hole and the texture coming from the spout. Couldn't see anything in the log files from ~/Library/Application Support/Surviving Mars/logs/ either beyond the init info. Not sure if that's where I should be looking. Appreciate the time you've put into this fix—frustrating the devs have sat on it for so long.
Uses an ice/water texture to show the level now (less ugly/noticeable).
I can add an option for completely invis, if you don't care for seeing the grid icons as the "water" level?
