Can't say much about it breaking historic look, tho I'll admit no actual research took place while making this mod. :P
Again thanks for the feedback and support!
The regular units all got the same helmet, as to have it be a sort standard issue gear. The mercenaries however received a more varied set of equipment and weapons, from head to foot gear, as well as weapon and shield. That was how I (and @Grimskar, who actually gave the idea) imagined a unit of mercenaries to look like, dressing and wielding whatever they bought themselves or looted from the battlefield.
Of course I could've kept some of them wearing clothes on their heads, but I figured anyone fighting on the frontlines for a living would prefer having better protection while doing so. The only piece of equipment I kept as standard for all mercenaries was the chest piece (there are 2 variants, but with minor differences). The reason why is that I wanted them to still look unique, as they are unique units for the most part, and since very few units wear this piece of armour, I decided to have all mercenary units have it as a "signature" chest piece of sorts.
Yeah the mod really is a "helmets for everyone" kind of thing, for the most part XD. When I started working on this mod, my main goal was to give the mid tier units (sabre infantry, archers etc) a more distinct look compared to their militia counterparts, to make the player feel like his army has improved not only in it's units's stats, but also in their look.
That said, I didn't want to completely revamp their armour, as I was fine with most of it, ahthough the lamellar chest piece worn by said mid-tier units didn't look that much different compared to the chest pieces worn by militia, so the one thing I decided to change was the headgear, swapping those leather caps for a proper lamellar helmet.
[rest of reply above, as Steam won't allow comments with more than 1k characters >.<]
That shield design does look kinda weird indeed. Maybe it's meant for blocking melee attacks and to punch people, rather than to block missile fire.
As you can see, it kinda works... literally two mods (any reskin + historical seems to have the same outcome)
Can you send me a screenshot of the problem you are experiencing?
Only units it does not affect are the ones which have had it's weapons/shields changed by my mod, like the Warriors of the Left and the Defenders of Hebei.

The above mod is the realistic weapons mod. its awesome! But your mod is too sweet to give up :P
@Grimskar Already finished the Qiang units, and currently working on the Mercenaries! I've been also working on that separate mod for the DLC, which should be uploaded alongside this one's update! I'll try and post another comparison preview video tomorrow, as soon as I'm done with the mercenaries!
Changes made: Mounted Crossbowmen received same armour as Mounted Archers.
As for the ideas, keep'em coming! Those are always welcome. Your idea about adding more variety to the mercenaries is actually a wonderful idea I did not contemplate before, since all other units were modded towards uniformity, instead of variety! So thanks for the awesome idea :D
Its your mod ofc, im just spouting ideas! I only dabbled with Rome 2's mod tools and created a reskin for rome in the divided empire campaign, which is hwy I like this mod so much because my idea was a very basic version of yours, make the units look uniform at their different levels of quality so the army doest look like a mish mash group.
In other news, I've checked some of the units from the Eight Princes DLC, and I've already seen some units that could use a reskin. I will get to update most of them through a separate mod, as those are exclusive to the DLC. This however does not apply to the 4 units which will also become available in the main campaign, as those are coming as part of the 1.2.0 update, not as part of the DLC.
If you want to take a look at the new units for yourself, check Zerkovich's video: https://youtu.be/FdFMKcGhuik
The update 1.06 of the mod is going to be uploaded in a couple of minutes, and a small hotfix might follow up tomorrow, after the DLC is released.
Suggestion for units next:
- All Quang horses for Meng
- Leopard and Tiger Cav
- Mercenaries for Sun Jian
Update show go live in a couple of hours.
I intend to upload some pictures with the changes made for this update by tomorrow, and upload the update itself by wednesday or thursday, prior to the Eight Princes DLC release.
Keep an eye out for changes in the images above! And thanks for the support!
I've already begun working on the next update, and those two units are on the list!
They are still going to be wearing leather armour, as their armour value is lower than that of Sabre Infantry/ Cavalry for example. But you can still expect them to look way more professional after the update is applied!
Again, thanks for the support!
