oh and also the scripts this mutation uses can cause buggy behavior in vanilla play, so when you are not playing this mutation you should disable it in the add-ons menu in-game, then restart the game entirely to ensure script changes are wiped and replaced by the vanilla ones. Behaviors include but are not limited to glitchy reload and firing animations due to conflicting magazine sizes and firing speeds, inaccessible melees when picked up, inaccessible special ammo boxes when picked up, teammate healthbars being invisible on the hud when they shouldn't be, etc etc. To play the mutation with no issues, enable it, then restart the game. To play anything else with no issues, disable this mutation, then restart the game.

just so everyone is aware, this mutation is in active development, and the description in no way accurately reflects the contents of the current build. The mutation is being worked on periodically by RainLovesCats when he has the time, and its design objective is to make the game a blend of 'exponentially more difficult' + 'slower-paced and equipment-scavenging friendly' + 'as close to real life as possible without becoming unfun/unfair'. In the current build, special infected behave considerably differently in the name of being harder to deal with, witches are as terrifying as you used to think they were when you first played, and tanks require a full team of not-stupid players to take down effectively. Gunplay has been thoroughly altered, with some weapons now excelling at certain tasks such as the AWP now being a witch killer that is the only weapon capable of causing a stumble-animation on the witch, etc etc. Please keep this in mind if you play the mutation at the moment.

Shoving now do more damages to SI , which is really good because such mechanism well counter-balances SI's fast movements , a very good feature i've discovered recently.

Also , oil tanks cannot be ignited by shooting directly at them , which is causing a problem if throwables are not available on non-official maps.

Yeah, melee weapons are a work in progress currently. I was experimenting with having them take multiple hits to kill infected, though the way the game calculates melee damage for common infected is strange so it makes them act weird.

Yeah, since the mutation modifies the weapon scripts, you'd have to uncheck the addon in your addons menu and restart your game before playing the default gamemodes. The scripts only work properly on a locally hosted server.

Also I did want to mention some glitches. After playing a game of this mutation on a local server with bots, then quitting to main menu and going straight into a vanilla versus game, some nasty side effects carried over such as different crosshair, my bullets appearing more accurate to me than they were serverside, not being able to access a melee/ammo box I picked up, and the uzi having a visually janky firing rate. I assume because of strange conflicts that did not get overwritten by vanilla when they should have.

Also, seems you can fire the hunting rifle (and military sniper) as fast as you are able to click, literally to the point it can behave like a machine gun if you click fast enough. I adore the raised firing rates that are more realistic to how I would panic-shoot irl, but it seems certain semi-automatics have no firerate cap like a hunting rifle. I was emptying my sniper mags in about 1.2 seconds on tanks when I discovered this. Still fun, but very broken lol.

From what I experienced, pistols take 2 or 3 chest shots (if you're close to the target), and an AK-47 or M60 seems to take 1 maybe sometimes 2 center-mass shots from medium and long ranges. I implore you not to downgrade or weaken the weaponry. The primary reason I loved this (even just playing it solo with semi-braindead bots) is because all my weapons felt genuinely strong and reliable, even if I was stuck with a pistol spam-firing in a panic when backed into a corner. The feel of being a glass cannon is awesome and puts so much more emphasis on wise use of equipment and strategic positioning during tense/heated engagements with infected.
Instead of nerfing weapons in any way, I recommend you maybe buff one or two slightly for balancing purposes (such as M60 I mentioned) and then if you want even MORE difficulty, simply raise the common count so there's more to shoot, that way there's more targets and thus more danger but none of your equipment feels less effective in any way.

I was thinking about having pistols/smgs take seven shots to kill infected on torso hits, having the M16 take four shots, having the AK47 take three shots, and having the M60/Sniper rifles take two shots. Right now I think pistols take five shots and the AK47 and M60 both take three shots to kill infected.

I can experiment with making the M60 have slower accuracy recovery, though it probably won't be too much or the animations on the model won't line up as well.

Thanks for the feedback. The original mod back in 2019 did actually have two additional gamemodes called Left 2 Die and Left for Dead, which had two survivors and one survivor, respectively. I'm in the process of updating those. I'm also working on bug checking a version with permanent death that might not have incaps at all.

For the mutation, I tried to base the amount of carryable ammo a gun can have on how much the real world version of the gun with the same magazine would have. With the M60, it can easily take belts of ammunition that can be 200 rounds or more, but the box magazine on L4D2's M60 only holds 100 rounds, so I based it on that.

As the M60 fires a 7.62x51mm round, it should do a bit more damage than the AK47, and about the same amount of damage as the sniper rilfes. I could definitely make it two shot infected on non-center mass hits to the torso/shoulder.

I think my only complaint is the M60 only having 100 rounds and seeming to do about the same damage as the ak-47, resulting in the ak-47 being superior as it can be restocked and has more ammo. Personally I think the M60 should be given excessive recoil so only the first shot is semi-accurate, have 200 rounds, and do enough damage that 1 shot anywhere that is not a limb is a 1-hit kill, and anywhere else is a 2-shot kill (so legs and arms).

I wish there were duo and solo versions that adjusted the max weapon ammo accordingly, and solo would have substantially reduced random horde timers/sizes for the player to go slow and shop and strategize carefully out of necessity due to being all alone.

I also did just crash on Stormy No Mercy level 4 after the elevator though, not sure what caused it but if I can help with bug reports somehow, let me know.

this is really tense and I love it, strategic decisions of where to hold during a horde, sharing medicine as need-be, and not being caught in the open are extremely important factors in not dying. I really love how everybody and everything is a glass cannon. Zombies can be mowed down with ease if you have the right chokepoint and enough health, but a single hunter catching you alone for only a few seconds can end you (on expert). It has a higher skill ceiling than regular realism expert, and thus even allows people to play solo to some degree as long as they know what they're doing and have fast reaction times in close-quarters special infected encounters.


Please keep updating this, it's my favorite difficulty-enhancing overhaul mutation I've seen. There was real care put into making sure the player always felt powerful in the weaponry they had but still always vulnerable with how quickly it could go wrong should a bad decision be made with no time left to correct.

Been working on updating it and fixing bugs on and off for a while now. College kinda got in the way of doing it for a bit. I do have an updated version that runs fine, although I've been trying to figure out the direction I want the mod to go in before uploading it.

Is this the most realistic zombie apocalypse that you can turn L4D2 into with mods? No.
Special infected would never exist. Real life doesn't have a HUD. A lot of the weapons in the game are not what you would realistically find.

If you're looking for the most realistic zombie apocalypse this game can be? This aint it.
(Although this is the only mod I've found to realistically tighten shotgun spread)

But...

Is it the most realistic L4D2 apocalypse that you can turn L4D2 into with mods? Yes.
And it's fucking brilliant. Thankyou so much.
