Hello. Since you will probably update this soon to 1.4, may I suggest increasing otters safe max temperature from 20c to 40c?
Many otters species live on tropical regions and have to problem with higher temps, the only exception being the sea otter. It would be the same temperature range vanilla huskies have.

Hello, I can also relate to people describing how they don't have to hunt anymore because there are so many 10% eaten corpses littering the map. Do your animals hate to scavenge? I ask because it seems carnivores hunt and risk dying to subsequent wounds even when there are many available dead bodies to eat.
This part is subjective but the 'laugh' of the hyenas and the howl of coyotes is honestly annoying. I had a handful of hyenas and I was going mad because of their constant and loud 'HAHEEEHAHA' sounds. The coyote as well makes a kind of prolonged, constipated 'eeee!' sound and I can never bring myself to tame them because of it. If these animals were made to be less loud and make noises much less often, I bet most would appreciate it. Thanks

Is there a reason why otters are so vicious? They'll attack coyotes and win often. It just seems weird. Maybe their body size is too high. Also, coyotes in real life are pack animals. Would it be possible to make them congregate in packs and attack together similar to herd animals like muffalos? It would be a bit more realistic and maybe kind of cool. Of course, it might make them very deadly.

I was happy playing with this mod but it is just extremely unballanced because all thos predators will kill everything on the map, I don't even have to hunt anymore I just collect corpses.
You need to reduce the spawn rate of those predators.
Marvin 5 Jan, 2022 @ 5:41pm
any idea when this will be compatible with ce?
Vartarhoz 24 Sep, 2021 @ 2:45pm
Isn't it weird that Arctic Coyote (-25) have worse cold resistance than German shepherd (-40) from Cats&Dogs.
Sarg Bjornson  [author] 28 Jul, 2021 @ 10:54pm
That's good feedback, I could give Stun to those two
Kell 28 Jul, 2021 @ 7:48pm
Tyvm Moonshrooms. I suspected something like too low hitpoints etc. I didn't noticed the stun-mechanic, because often i was not on screen when a fight started. But no idea if i had realized the stun is missing xD
*getting back my peace of mind*

And yes, thank you to the VE Team - making these mods!
Moonshrooms 28 Jul, 2021 @ 5:23pm
If you want them to quit hunting their own species, I'd think you'd have to lower their maxPreyBodySize, but I haven't fiddled with that to see where the cutoff point is.

Either way, the stun/surprise attack works wonders to lower the chances of them getting hurt and bleeding out after hunting hares and such. I'm not sure why the mod doesn't have this initially, but I like the extra animals too much to just boot it, so maybe this will help other people who also don't wanna just remove the mod. And thank you to the VE Team for making so many mods for us. Cheers! :) (2/2)

For all the peeps annoyed at Coyotes/Otters bleeding out from rat bites, etc, there's a way you can fix it!

In Vanilla predator defs have some additional code to their bite/scratch attacks called SurpriseAttack, which seems to be what stuns animals they hunt when they first attack it, giving them a chance to actually do some damage/kill before their prey can fight back if the first attack doesn't immediately kill them. Even smaller predators like foxes have it.

I just added the Surprise/Stun code to the RaceDef files for Otters/Coyotes and it works wonders for not having them bleeding out and dying constantly. I just compared/contrasted it to vanilla defs to make sure I got things like the placement right. (1/2)

I'm not affected at all, I'm just telling you how I see it... The mechanics in this mod ARE vanilla, as we didn't add any programming to the mod at all.
Kell 27 Jul, 2021 @ 2:18am
no need to feel affected. i only tell: if you haul animal corpses in pairs for free every day you get much meat, much leather and so on.
some ppl love it - some ppl not.
and vanilla animals do not bleed out against a rat or a rabbit that often. it's possible but it's rare.
Sarg Bjornson  [author] 26 Jul, 2021 @ 11:55pm
That is absolutely a vanilla mechanic, though. If you dropped this mod for being imbalanced... maybe you shouldn't be modding the game, since your bar for what imbalance is is, imho, too low
Kell 26 Jul, 2021 @ 11:36pm
coyotes spawn quite often and maybe it is the "smallest" prey on map/range, they encounter...

i can rpg-explain it for me as territorial fight. but always both die (winner by bleeding out), so you get 2 corpses (meat, fur) for free -> pretty imbalanced, so i dropped this mod.
same bleeding out with otters as i mention below,
i never gone hunting and had no place for animal corpses because all suicide on the map so frequently...
Sarg Bjornson  [author] 26 Jul, 2021 @ 11:04pm
It's not an issue of this mod, no. No special behaviour code here
Winterfist 26 Jul, 2021 @ 10:45pm
I have no idea if it is Vanilla Animals Expanded: Boreal Forest issue, but my arctic coyotes see their own species as valid prey animals for when they get the need to hunt. I haven't seen other species doing it, but have seen wild coyotes kill each other in each game I've started in 1.3

There is of course, the very high chance I've broke something with my mod pile and have no idea where to look to fix it. Perhaps set the coyotes to hunt smaller prey?
Sarg Bjornson  [author] 20 Jun, 2021 @ 11:00pm
That's a RimThreaded issue, the animals don't have any special code at all and there is nothing we can change in them
wamblim 20 Jun, 2021 @ 2:30pm
Hey Oskar. Just to let people know that VEA (specifically Megawolverine from Tundra and Arctic Coyote from Boreal Forest) cause game breaking issues with Rimthreaded mod. We found the incompatibility today. Have a nice day :)
Kell 9 Apr, 2021 @ 9:43am
otter and arctic coyotes kill themselves nearly every fight - even against a rat. if they win they bleed out. is that a "hitpoint" thing?
Sarg Bjornson  [author] 31 Mar, 2021 @ 11:13pm
You can easily replace the sound file in the mod's folders with any other .ogg sound file
Sarg Bjornson  [author] 31 Mar, 2021 @ 10:48am
It's frequency is exactly the same as other wolves / warg
Oskar Potocki  [author] 6 Jan, 2021 @ 4:24am
Otters from the game standpoint are just a reskinned standard animal, they have no extra code in relations to masters etc. Some other mod must be messing it up.
Drunk Obelix 6 Jan, 2021 @ 4:14am
I have a small problem with setting a master to my tamed Otters. Is that just my problem or is it global? Also if you know how to fix it I would be really happy if somebody could help me figgure it out.
Oskar Potocki  [author] 4 Dec, 2020 @ 3:19pm
Never was a glitch like that.
Sugar Show 4 Dec, 2020 @ 2:06pm
Do the glitch those bears doing 0 damage got fixed?
Viper 5 Oct, 2020 @ 9:08am
yes, i was just looking at the old, original authors description and thinking the same:

"All bears, Alpacas, Ostrich, Rhinoceros, Cow, Elk, Caribou, Warg and Elephants can now be used as pack animals and will be used by other factions"

So if animals don't have to be addressed individually, and this is doing it on a "category-wide" basis, I think it's time I abandoned that mod.

Thanks for the help Oskar+Sarg, you guys are the best, bar none!
Sarg Bjornson  [author] 5 Oct, 2020 @ 9:05am
Vanilla Animals Overhaul is modifying the bear base, which will affect all modded bears that inherit from it. This is sloppy
Viper 5 Oct, 2020 @ 9:00am
Ah, ok, that makes sense. These bears entered the map via the "Caravan animals wander in" even from your Events Expanded. The only mod I can think of that might be doing it is Vanilla Animals Overhaul Reloaded but I wasn't aware it affected non-vanilla animals...
Oskar Potocki  [author] 5 Oct, 2020 @ 8:48am
Easy - it seems some mod that you have tried to put Pack texture on top of it (notice that the bear has gear tab, meaning it carries some caravan cargo). However, because bears don't carry packs in vanilla, we decided not to make pack graphics for it. Some mod you have however expects to see them, hence the pink box. Do you know if you have any mod that would make bears pack animals?
Viper 5 Oct, 2020 @ 8:44am
i have that window open in the screenshot so you can see that the texture *does* appear in the top left of that window, just not in the actual game field.
Oskar Potocki  [author] 5 Oct, 2020 @ 8:25am
Can you send a screenshot?
Viper 5 Oct, 2020 @ 8:23am
what do you suggest, any ideas? I moved the mod all around my list, did a verify integrity check through steam, still pink squares.
Oskar Potocki  [author] 5 Oct, 2020 @ 8:20am
Pink squares are missing textures.
Viper 5 Oct, 2020 @ 8:06am
i'm getting pink squares for black bears in my highly-modded game. gonna try to debug and report back
JMO 23 Sep, 2020 @ 6:11pm
I messed with it for awhile and installed the patch linked at the bottom of the FAQ here and it seems to work now.
JMO 23 Sep, 2020 @ 5:12pm
Oskar you say the mod is compatible with A Dog Said but I can't seem to get my colonists to install a new front leg that my blackbear lost to a megaspider.
Rikimaru 31 Aug, 2020 @ 6:19pm
I aint letting no otter carry an assault rifle
Trad (boy)wife 14 Jul, 2020 @ 5:37pm
Could the otters be buffed to be capable of hauling? Otters carry things irl fairly often, such as clams and rocks to crack open clams. They're pretty smart.
Noble du Québec 1 Jul, 2020 @ 7:07pm
I have suggestion, could we have things like vultures and other that could eat rotten corpses and just generally hang in places where there's lots of death?
generallyoverwhelmed 23 Jun, 2020 @ 8:50am
These are my tamed ones though, not a manhunter pack
Oskar Potocki  [author] 23 Jun, 2020 @ 7:34am
it's hardcoded vanilla thing, animals in manhunter packs always howl a lot.
generallyoverwhelmed 23 Jun, 2020 @ 7:32am
If I could make a small request? Coyotes yowl *constantly* and it's a bit annoying once you've got a hauling swarm of them. I don't know if it's possible to adjust the frequency of animal noises though :(
Oskar Potocki  [author] 31 May, 2020 @ 4:58pm
yes!
Pound_Town 31 May, 2020 @ 4:41pm
Is your 'Vanilla Animals Expanded' series compatible with 'A Dog Said'?
Sarg Bjornson  [author] 12 May, 2020 @ 9:14am
I have a feeling that it might be Combat Expanded. Although it has patches for many mods, I doubt it has patches for SO many mods as you have ;)
Mr. Krill 12 May, 2020 @ 9:11am
thank you very much! I will look for the mod that causes this error
Sarg Bjornson  [author] 12 May, 2020 @ 8:58am
What I'm trying to say is that those errors are not caused by this mod, but by other mod in your modlist. You can remove this mod, and in one day you may get another error due to the faulty mod causing problems... As it is, we can't fix anything because there is nothing broken on this mod itself.
Mr. Krill 12 May, 2020 @ 8:56am
I didn't mean that. I don't understand mods (their programming, and everything else), so could you just say whether it is planned to get rid of these errors or not? does it make sense for me to turn off this mod?
