For those of you, like me, who can't find this map even after changing the experimental map size setting: from the menu go to Map Editor > Load Map and there you'll find the Japan map
Not_SandwichCat1 21 Jan @ 5:56am
how do i load the map?
Carrey 22 Feb, 2024 @ 11:37pm
why 1950 not 2000?
Shuriken 28 Oct, 2022 @ 11:05am
Could there be a version that starts in 1950?
Ant Craft 27 Jul, 2021 @ 4:51pm
@LeVa - It's a built in mod that comes with the game called Sandbox Mode, similar to the other built in mods like no costs and no vehicle end year.
bat.kicks 5 Jun, 2021 @ 12:33pm
@tomasantony - I swear to God I've been trying to find that "sandbox mode" mod for a while now and I can't seem to be able to locate anything in the Workshop.

Could you by any chance please post a link to it?

Also, I know this is a dumb question but how exactly does one start a game on this map? I have the megalomaniac mode engaged and all that but when I click to start a Free game, I can't for the life of me see the map...
tomasantony 11 Aug, 2020 @ 7:33am
@Nox - easiest way to do this is load the "sandbox mode" mod - set the year to what you want, plus anything else like placing new towns, modifying industries and setting your initial cash reserves, then you can disable the sandbox mod to play.

Hi guys. I just notice that there is a phantom road cost when using this map. I got this road cost even when I have not built anything at the beginning of the game...
Nox 7 Feb, 2020 @ 7:57am
how can I start at 1920 or some another date. Game doesnt allow me to change the date and I dont want to play it from 1850.

Very nice... i mean... very nice indeed! Thanks for this!! :)

The city name "hanamatsu" is wrong, to be exact "hamamatsu"

@Angel of death, u can change that urself

Absolutely love the map. Have edited in a couple of additional roads around Tokyo's bay though, to try and help the traffic a little.

This map gives me rememberence of Total War Shogun, so I changed all the cities' names in to Clans' names:steamhappy:
agrimreaper85 15 Dec, 2019 @ 1:21pm
is there a way to add all vehicles, not just asian vehicles
Damokles 15 Dec, 2019 @ 6:26am
And another thing I would change is the streets connecting Tokyo to its neighboring cities since it creates a traffic jam almost immediately and unfortunately cities don't seem to upgrade their streets.

Great work Akirih, I must say the last update really did improve the map a lot. The only thing I spotted was the missing plank supply for the Aomori Machine Factory and the Morioka Tools Factory below it. The output of the Kitani saw mill is already spoken for in the vicinity. And the next closest one Aizukwakamatsu Saw mill also has other consumers that are closer.

Thanks everyone who provided feedback, this is my last update to the map, its time to start playing the game!
Akirih  [author] 13 Dec, 2019 @ 3:58am
Well, some mod to reduce rendering distances will surely pop up anytime soon. Also, my weekend update will include a substancial increase in forest areas, will not be as much as to be "67%" covered, but it will increase a lot :)
Snazz 12 Dec, 2019 @ 6:58pm
That's fair. The devs should have made distant objects less demanding, some games just swap tree models for "fake" 2D "billboard" versions when they're far enough not to notice.
Akirih  [author] 12 Dec, 2019 @ 6:16pm
Snazz, the reason i tried to not go overboard with trees is that it takes a huge toll on performace, and with a map this big full of cities and industries, while getting more roads and vehicles during free play, covering the map with trees might kill the map for some people.
Snazz 12 Dec, 2019 @ 6:11pm
Looks very bare for a country that's 67% covered in forest, can you coat the mountains with trees?
Akirih  [author] 12 Dec, 2019 @ 1:08pm
Thanks for the amazing feedback, after spending about 10h running his version of the map, I've noticed a lot of what you pointed out. I'll have to change a lot of industries, and add a few more as well. I'll try to go over all the places you pointed out but since it will be such a big change I won't be able to do it over night on a work day. Expect a big update this weekend.
Damokles 12 Dec, 2019 @ 1:01pm
- Akita Saw Mill only has one Forst as supplier, but Morioka Tools Factory and Oshu Machines Factory compete for planks

Generally I'd rework the ratio between the different industry stages. I'd like to more often be able to use several suppliers for a plant, this of course covers the different stages. Steel mills require 2iron+2coal for steel so you need 2 iron and coal plants each to maximize a mill, a goods or machines factory also needs 2 fully upgraded steel mills to maximize. Also the plastics or planks would be needed in the same amount.

- Kagoshima Farm is really far from Fukuoka Food Processing, with the food drop-off in Kunamoto, there is a long empty journey back by ship
- Chiba Food Processing is too far from a farm, I also route the output from Nakatsukawa Farm to the Nagoya Food Processing Plant
- The location of the Nagoya Food Processing Plant was better before 1) it was at the end of the return from Nagoya via the farms, where the Grain could be picked up from a shared truck stop. 2) It was accessibly by ship. So just change it back
- One of Shizuoka or Yokohama Chemical Plant is redundant
- Maebashi Construction Materials is without a good Quarry in the vicinity
- Move Sapporo Oil Refinery a bit so that it is accessible by ship
- Nagaoka Oil Refinery#2 is at a good location, but Nagaoka Oil Refinery is now redundant
- Nigata Tools Factory and Nagaoka Machine Factory both compete for planks
[Part 2/3]
Damokles 12 Dec, 2019 @ 1:00pm
Akirih, thanks for the changes, though I'll keep playing the old version a bit longer.

FYI I spent around 35 mio to build two large airports, one north of chiba (relatively cheap) and one between Kyoto and Osaka, which was 24 mio.

Another thing I noticed, is that all bridges are impassable for ships, e.g. between Kobe and Tokushima. This could easily be fixed if you'd increase their height.

Another that you could look at, would be to make the plants close to water more easily accessible by ship, right now you have to build tunnels through the mountains so that the catchment area is close enough. Examples for that are the Kanazawa Construction Materials Plant and the Uwajima Oil Well.

I opened the update in the map editor and I'll just list what I would change:
- Kushiro Farm is really far from Nayoro Food Processing
- Okayama Food Processing Plant is far from another farm but close to Takamatsu Food Processing plant, I'd replace the former by a farm

Sup, Damokles

I've made some adjustments based on your feedback, Tokyo area should provide better routing options now. Changes some other industries around aswell to make it more manageable to build cargo routes without having to tackle rough heights early on.

Sadly I can't/don't want to do anything about giving "free" space for an airport, Japan terrain is naturally very rough and most costal/plain areas have towns and cities in them. That said, theres a couple places moderately far from cities that can hold an airport with little to no terraforming.

I hope you try this new version :)
Damokles 11 Dec, 2019 @ 4:30pm
Really nice map, although there are some weird industry locations, e.g., refineries high up in the mountains. Especially the one next to the island with two oil wells. Also the two plastics plants around Tokyo are kinda alone, no oil refinery or goods factory close by.
The other problem I see, is that there is hardly any space for an airport, but I don't know it that can be fixed without messing up the map.

Very nice map :)

Hey, 鳩利空 -Blutvogt-

I'll try to upload the map with no cities/industries tomorrow, removing them should be easy, but i need to clean up the terrain and roads as well so it might take a few hours to finish
Blutvogt 11 Dec, 2019 @ 6:04am
is it possible to upload a version of this map without cities, industries and streetconnections?
Akirih  [author] 11 Dec, 2019 @ 5:46am
Hello everyone! Hope you're enjoying the game as much as I am.

Quick update about the map. I added a new City and 30 + industries. After trying a couple different starting spots I found the available routes too strict and punishing. I expect this change to open up more starting oportunities and provide more expansion mid/late game.

I apologize to everyone who started a game in this map already, but I recommend you start a new game with the updated map for a better enjoyment!

I'm heading out to work now, if anyone finds something that should be changed or has any suggestions please comment :)
