will the voice pack still work as normal if I just put the spark version on a normal unit?

Your issue is most likely due to other mods. Remove the mods that overhaul or add new types of soldiers, genders, or other character options that don't support custom voicepacks.

Mind you, this is a completely new mod from scratch. While the video list that the voicelines were extracted from include all the vids from Schwalbes description, it's still a completely new mod.
